Alexandre Casanovas

Alexandre Casanovas – Translator

English to Spanish literary translator, focused on non-fiction books. More than 15 years of experience in the Spanish publishing industry.

Overview

I started my career in a small publishing company, where I worked as an editor revising books about pets and DIY. Not my favourite topics, though, but checking and revising books written by other people allowed me to dig deeper in the mechanisms of Spanish language and master my knowledge of my native tongue. After that first step, I edited dozens of books covering all kinds of topics, from wines to survival skills, from history to politics. Then, I started working for biggest companies, where I was asked to write small texts to complete Spanish adaptations of foreign books. And, finally, I was offered my first translation project: a book to learn Italian, written in English, and to be translated into Spanish. I had to work with three languages at the same time —not bad for my first translation project.

In these recent years I have translated more than a dozen books, covering a wide array of topics, mainly related to finance, entrepreneurship and politics. Every title has been a enriching and fulfilling experience, as I have had to adopt and adapt very different voices; from the magnificent prose of Mr. Yanis Varoufakis in “Adults in the Room” to the authoritative speech of Columbia Business School teacher Steven Mandis in “The Real Madrid Way”, including -just to name a few- the enlightening professional autobiography of Mr. John Neff or the 17th century teachings of the greatest master of the sword, Miyamoto Musashi. Along the way, I have worked too in several titles for the “For Dummies” series, which always demand a clear and fluid prose which everybody can understand at “first reading”.

Every author has his/her own voice and working method, and I always try to fulfil his/her needs. In some cases, I can discuss with the author how to translate idiomatic expressions and difficult passages, and we collaborate closely to complete the Spanish version. But, in other cases, the author simply trusts my skills, I assume all responsibilities and I just deliver a final text “ready to publish”. But, in all cases, I always try to adopt the author’s voice, respect his/her own style and, at the same time, produce a flawless Spanish text that flows seamlessly. Whatever your needs, I am sure we will find the best approach to your work and the working method that suits you best.

Work experience

Self-employed

I work firstly as a translator, but I have done some editing and ghostwriting tasks too. Right now, I am waiting for the incoming release of my two last finished translations: "The Future is Faster Than You Think", by P. Diamandis and S. Kotler, and "2030" by Wharton School teacher Mauro F. Guillén.

Parramón Ediciones

Jan, 2006 — Jan, 2009 (about 3 years)

I worked as an editor, but occasionally I had to write small texts to complete Spanish adaptations of foreign books. I kept on improving my writing skills, and I learned to assume more responsibility about the final text.

Tikal Ediciones
