Alexander Howard

Alexander Howard – Editor

I'm an editor with over a decade of experience in developmental editing, copyediting and proofreading. Specialties in travel and memoir.

Overview

For the last five years, I’ve served as an in-house editor for Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel content producer. I’ve worked on guidebooks, reference titles, news stories, essay collections and the US magazine. Before that, I've been a newsroom editor, a ghostwriter and itinerant short story writer.

I have a keen eye for the written word, as well as a passion for clarity and energy in all types of prose – fiction, nonfiction and all types of genres. As an editor, I'm enthusiastic, careful and precise, but it's your story; my job is to cut away the weeds and let the writer's voice grow through.

In my professional experience, I've found that collaboration is key – my most exciting projects have been when editors, writers and designers all work together to create the best content possible. I look forward to working with you to tell your story.

Work experience

Lonely Planet

Aug, 2017 — Jan, 2019 (over 1 year)

As managing editor, I was responsible for the content and editorial strategy of Lonely Planet magazine, a quarterly with a rate base of 125,000. I worked with dozens of freelance writers to develop, create and edit travel and general interest content for Lonely Planet's award-winning magazine. I was hands-on at every stage of the process, managing day-to-day operations of the US magazine team, writing and developing features, commissioning new writers, and coordinating photo shoots and research trips.

Lonely Planet

Mar, 2014 — Aug, 2017 (over 3 years)

I managed all digital and print content relating to Canada and the Western US, overseeing guidebook development through planning, research, and editing. In the digital space, I worked with writers to develop engaging content in the form of blog posts, online features and reviews.
