Clifton Wilkinson

Clifton Wilkinson – Editor

Meticulous, friendly editor specialising in travel and history. Worked at the British Museum, Rough Guides and Lonely Planet, among others.

Overview

I'm an editor, writer and travel and history enthusiast, with an eclectic list of previous jobs, from translation work in Spain and curating booklets at the British Museum, to almost twenty years as a travel writer, editor and project manager at international brands Rough Guides and Lonely Planet, working on over 150 titles.

The English language is a joy to work with and words are my passion. I see the relationship with a writer as a collaboration, a team effort to produce the best end result possible, something we can both be proud of and enthusiastic about.

Work experience

Lonely Planet, London, UK

May, 2006 — May, 2019 (about 13 years)

I worked at Lonely Planet for 13 years in a role that involved commissioning, editing and writing content to a high standard, both restructuring text and general copy editing, working across different media including print and video, helping the traveller get the most of their trip.
I also worked in the Product Development team, creating fresh designs for Lonely Planet content to make it more appealing and easier to use for readers.

Rough Guides, London, UK

Aug, 2000 — May, 2006 (over 5 years)

As Senior Editor at Rough Guides I oversaw the commissioning and editing of the brand's travel content, as well as image selection, managing other editors and representing the company on TV and radio.

The British Museum, London

Sep, 1996 — Oct, 1999 (about 3 years)

At the British Museum I was part of a team looking after visitors, answering their questions, writing and editing guides and leaflets to enhance their experience, and generally making sure people got the most out of their visit.
