Claire Gerus

Claire Gerus – Editor

I believe in editing and agenting books that will change readers' lives for the better--whether it's fiction or nonfiction.

Overview

I have been advising, editing, and representing authors internationally for over 36 years. I served as Editorial Director of two publishing houses, and senior/executive editor at Kensington Publishing, Rodale, Doubleday Canada, and Random House. I also wrote articles for U.S. and Canadian newspapers and magazines. As a literary agent for the past 22 years, I represent a wide variety of authors, including New York Times Bestselling authors in both fiction and nonfiction. I have given dozens of seminars on proposal writing at editing and writing workshops across the United States. I am excited to contribute to the writing of books that will change readers' lives for the better, whether as a writer, editor, or agent. I have been all three, and was named on the cover of three nonfiction books. I have also ghosted several books but will not name them ( a ghost's privilege)!

Work experience

Stillpoint Publishing

Jan, 2002 — Feb, 2004 (about 2 years)
I was responsible for the acquisition and handling of all editorial projects. The publishing house was tucked away in a small New Hampshire village, one that nurtured body, mind and spirit. Appropriately, this was the theme of the books I was to acquire. My personal mandate was to find projects that would change readers' lives for the better-whether a personal memoir, a mind/body practice, or an alternative healing discovery. There was no limit to the nature of the acquired books as long as it had a meaningful message of hope and positive lifestyle. One particular book is especially memorable: the true story of a dog that mysteriously arrived at the home of a grieving widow the day after her husband died. "Daby" became her companion and loving protector until he, too, passed--with identical marks to those of her deceased husband after efforts to save his life. This book, and others I chose and stood behind, created an ongoing passion for acquiring, editing, and delivering meaningful books to eager audiences--whatever the subject in future publishing houses in which I would work.

Literary Agent : I began Claire Gerus Literary Agency in 1995. It is still active today, and over the past 2 decades I have represented authors of every genre and specialty, with a specialty in nonfiction. As a result, hundreds of authors have found publishers, among them bestsellers in fiction and nonfiction. Over the years, I have realilzed that my real passion is editing and developmental guidance for authors,. I was editorial director of two publishing houses and executive editor of Kensington Publishing. I am now shifting my focus to editing, which is why I joined Reedsy--to help authors create a clear, exciting, entertaining, meaningful book that will change readers' lives for the better. I want my authors to create a book that, after the editing process, they can present to others with pride and confidence.
