Overview
I was a senior content editor for ten years (non-fiction) at a legal reference firm, a freelance fiction editor, and a lead line editor at a small publishing house. On top of my work experience, I have a B.A. in English, a Certificate in Publishing (where I scored As in the editing courses), and a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing (in which I earned a Letter of Distinction). I have four science fiction novels published, one of which is a multi-award winner.
I will provide a detailed edit to strengthen your narrative craft. Passive voice? Inconsistent POV? Overuse of filler words? Too many adverbs? Telling and not showing? Let me help!
My expertise is in science fiction and fantasy, where I am well-equipped to help you not only with your line or copy edit, but also point out overused tropes, themes, and character arcs. I am very comfortable with hard sci-fi terminology. Space opera, adventure, post-apocalyptic, LGBTQ, time travel ... to quote Lex from Jurassic Park: You name it, I got it!
I am also well-practiced at editing thrillers and horror, though if children are harmed gratuitously on the page, I will decline. Violence/gore against adults, I don't have an issue with.
I also have experience with Romance, though I am not interested in projects that feature dubious consent. I am practiced at contemporary and romantasy, though my preference is sapphic and sci-fi romance. And please, don't be shy about sending monster romance!
The non-fiction projects I edited were legal reference texts, so I understand legalese and would be an excellent copyeditor for a non-fiction legal or law-related text. I was lead editor of The Digest of Municipal & Planning Law for four years, as well as several other case digests/legislation titles (I worked for Westlaw). I have also edited mental health memoirs.
I understand that your story might be your baby. I also understand you want your baby to be a star. As such, I provide a tactful edit but a thorough one. I edit using Track Changes and Comments - I will send you the first three pages as a sample so you understand my process and we can determine what works best for our working relationship. I use the Comments for larger queries - like continuity or if something is too complex for an in-line suggestion. I use Track Changes to make suggestions to, for example, correct awkwardness, fix misplaced modifiers, or show how a phrase could be made more active.
I want you to be happy with the results but not feel overwhelmed by the process, so I will edit at your pace, and I'm always open to explaining any suggestions I make in more detail.
If you work with me, I'll provide excellent feedback and approach your project with tact.
Please note: my working hours are 9 - 4pm EST M-F (meaning I will reply to anything after 4pm or Sat-Sun the next business day).
I do not use AI tools in my editing.
