MEET ME

Hi, I'm Taryn! I have ten years of experience in fiction and nonfiction for children and young adults. My professional background includes experience with The Walt Disney Company, Andrea Brown Literary, The Bent Agency, Movable Type Management, and The Quarto Group.

My first job in publishing was an internship with Andrea Brown Literary at age 18. I quickly fell in love with the behind-the-scenes of books, moving to start a freelance editing business (teen novel critiques from the point of view of a teen) as I continued to intern and assist at a variety of remote publishing jobs. Over the five years I spent as a freelance editor, I worked with hundreds of authors, many of whom signed book deals with major houses.

Meanwhile, I was hired as a show writer at Disney Parks, where I worked on stories told through a different format. From there, I moved to Disney Publishing where I honed my ability to work with already existing stories in fresh, new ways. For the last few years, I have been an acquiring editor of kids' nonfiction with The Quarto Group, where I specialize in novelty, interactive, and book-plus formats across classic science and history topics.

In my non-book life, I am a national champion powerlifter and fitness coach, and I love thinking of my job as an editor the same way I think of my fitness coaching. I'm here to help you achieve your goals for your book in the way that is the most effective for you. That means tailoring my communication, explanation, and feedback to the way you work. It also means that my suggestions are only suggestions: you have the final say.

I specialize in big picture editorial. I love plot, story structure, high-concept premises, and character arcs. I believe no idea is ever too weird or too big or too unsaleable. My favorite part of the whole publishing industry is the query letter, and I've been known to write and critique them for fun.

At the end of our time working together, my goal is for you to have more than a stronger manuscript. My goal is that you will have the tools you need to write a stronger book next time.

Taryn is the best editor I've worked with on Reedsy. Without her, I would've queried agents and got a frustrating pass. I had the wrong age group (MG not YA) My concept needed improvement. She gave me tips other editors didn't mention. She encouraged questions/communication. Now my query is ready to rock and I have to carry that improved plot in a book rewrite. Patience is everything.
