Sun Cooper – Editor

Sun Cooper of Sun Literary, a diverse women-led studio specializing in creative writing and multicultural publishing projects.

Overview

I'm Sun Cooper, an experienced editor, publishing consultant, and founder of Sun Literary, a diverse women-led agency specializing in creative writing and multicultural publishing projects for women's and children's literature.

With 20 years' experience navigating the terrains of the publishing world, I've shepherded, edited, and consulted on a wide array of books in traditional, indie, and hybrid publishing. I understand the personal and soulful journey of publication, dedication to the craft and process, and of building excellent, trustworthy relationships in the publishing industry - all of which inform my own agency work and consultation. My author clients have been published with Harper Collins, Chronicle Books, She Writes Press, Red Hen and more. As an editor and publication agency, I've spearheaded multicultural editorial book review for Big Five Publishers such as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Collaborative Classroom, and Scholastic.

I offer manuscript critique, manuscript developmental editing, book proposal review and support, and book publishing consultation for authors within the categories of multicultural, women's, and children's literature. Additionally, my agency has cultivated a global roster of beta readers and expert multicultural and DEIA reviewers for publishers and authors with a unique methodology emphasizing shared progress.

Sun Literary has virtual agency worldwide and deeply values its relationships and partnerships within a globally diverse community within the literary arts and the publishing industry. This work was first imagined on my great-grandmother's desk in a horse barn on Monacan land in Virginia, flourished on Iipay-Tipay-Diegueño land in California, and was founded and continuously operates from the Cherokee capital of the state of Oklahoma, home to 39 tribes including the Indigenous Osage, Caddo, Kiowa, Comanche and Wichita peoples.

Apr, 2017 — Present

A Room of Her Own is a nonprofit foundation by and for women, digitally publishing women from around the world, and providing platforms for creative writers and artists gatherings. Some of its past fellows and featured authors and artists have included Maxine Hong Kingston, Rita Dove, Marilynne Robinson, and Janet Fitch. Through online publication and virtual gatherings curating the diverse, global voice of creative women, the shape, size, and capacity of our room changes exponentially. Together, we make room for each other and our work in our way.

In a similar vein of The Artist's Way and Writing Down the Bones, I've developed a unique Vision Mapping self-paced email course curated from my twelve years of experience working with authors, agents, writer organizations, presses and publishers; it is an uncommon method designed to help writers and visionaries thoughtfully and smartly ask and answer the three most important questions in your writing, platform, and publishing goals and provide resourceful milestone mapping for your unique, particular vision.

My past experience working with agents and publishers has funneled through my work with authors and relationships I've built through such organizations such as A Room of Her Own Foundation and the San Diego Writers and Publishers Association. As a former newspaper editor, as well as a contributor to magazines and a publishing consultant working in partnership with my authors, I am familiar with both the nature and the process of publishing for readers. The list of publishers I've communicated with and worked with are broad and varied, including Seventy Seven Press, Red Hen, Familius Publishing, Tate Publishing, Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing and others.

I also provide intuitive, editorial review and writing services for manuscripts, queries, endorsement and review campaigns, book proposals, book description and jacket copy, cover letters, and author biographies.

In addition, I offer fresh, expertly curated agent and contest lists with sample cover letters.
