Overview
I'm an empathetic developmental and/or line editor who believes in preserving an author's authentic voice. I work with first-time and established authors on their memoirs, literary novels, and narrative nonfiction (especially in the leadership space). I'm also ADHD-friendly.
For more than a dozen years I worked at a university press on trade and scholarly books in the humanities, most recently as the organization's editorial and production director. Before that, I edited books in the tech management space.
If you're stuck on your book and need a perspective from an outside eye that offers constructive editing suggestions, feel free to reach out to me.
I'm also a writer myself--with an MFA in creative writing from Warren Wilson College--so I know what it's like to wrestle with a manuscript.
Testimonials:
"Sumita Mukherji is an exceptionally talented writer and editor, and I’m grateful for her remarkable insight and sage advice. Not only is she smart, patient, and wise, but she is also the consummate professional—reliable, thoughtful, and compassionate. I cannot recommend her highly enough!”
—Helen Fremont, author of the memoir The Escape Artist
“Every writer needs an editor, even writers who are editors. When I decided I needed a second set of eyes on my work, Sumita came to mind immediately. As an editor, I have access to editorial networks, so could have cast a wide net. But I knew Sumita was a skilled and professional editor—exactly the person who could ensure that my work flowed well and its themes and narrative arc were clear. To top it off, Sumita has a wise and gentle manner that puts you at ease. I’m very grateful to Sumita for recognizing and helping me resolve the problems with my work. I would hire her again in a heartbeat.”
