Over the last 25+ years, I have worked with authors, publishers (both trade and academic), non-profits, and small businesses on a variety of writing and editing projects. I love helping people find their voice through the written word and working collaboratively with authors to develop stories, characters, and compelling content. My experience lends itself to developmental and copy editing as well as writing projects when needed.
I have extensive editorial experience with such groups as Pearson Publishing, Scott Foresman, and with Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Additionally I have experience as a grants manager and development director in the non profit space and have assisted such groups as the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. the American Lung Association, the T. Colin Campbell Foundation, and Hug-a-Book, an early literacy initiative of Family Focus, Inc.
What I love most however are books. I've spent many years working with writers on their manuscripts across nearly all genres and age groups, and I'm excited to continue to help authors hone their skills and fine tune their writing.
Testimonials for Patricia Cone
"Over the years my work with Patti Cone has enhanced my grant writing skills from providing facts and numbers to sharing the story that supports the facts and numbers. Her ability to integrate the two is phenomenal!"
Crystal Elliott-O'Connor, Early Childhood Leadership Professional
"Nothing is more important to a writer than an honest critique from an early reader who possesses literary and editorial insight and who can clearly express critical guidance. Patricia Cone is such a person, and I have relied on her to my great advantage as an author."
Russell Fee, author of A Dangerous Remedy, an Amazon Number1 bestseller in International Mystery & Crime. WINNER OF THE 2019 CHICAGO WRITERS ASSOCIATION BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD—INDIE FICTION
I have worked with Patti Cone on a variety of projects, from adult to children’s literature. She’s an insightful editor who is able to understand what is and isn’t working in a manuscript, and, more importantly, she’s able to communicate her concerns in a clear and constructive way.
I have found her comments on structural elements, plot, pacing, character development and narrative arc, to be as beneficial as her line-editing notes on grammar, punctuation, syntax and spelling.
Patti is a joy to work with. She’s encouraging and supportive, and she provides the tools you need to take your manuscript to the next level.
Janet Nolan, children’s and adult author
“[Thank you to]...Patricia Cone for proofreading the manuscript the second or third time I mistakenly thought I was finished.”
David Parrish, Author, Losing Jon, A Teen’s Tragic Death, A Police Cover-up, A Community’s Fight for Justice
“It’s mysterious how Patti always seems able to look beneath the surface of your writing, then reach in to pull out treasures you didn’t know were there. She has a gift for asking transformative questions that can add insight, depth and clarity to your work, while making you feel both safe and supported. She helps you see what is good in your writing so you have the courage to let the bad bits fall away. She doesn’t just tell you to dig deeper. She invites you to, “Dig here!”
Pamela Todd, Author, Picture Book, Middle Grade, YA, and Adult
"Patti Cone has been a writer and editor for us since the 1990s. Her work is timely and per our specs. She has edited a range of courses for us from medical topics, to braille, to technology. She has also written course sections for us on topics ranging from braille practice, to adjustment to blindness, to high school science courses. We've always appreciated working with Patti!"
Maki Wiering, Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
I have worked in-house and contractually for Hadley as an editor and writer--beginning in 1996, Hadley offers distance learning courses leading to high school and college degrees. I have assisted in writing content for a wide range of courses including literature, basic skills, science (for example Earth Science) health (Diabetes), and IT (using the Internet).
My work with Hadley has included both line, copy, and substantive editing. I also write content for their courses.
I work with fiction and nonfiction authors. I also write and edit content for textbook companies as well as for education and health nonprofits.
