Stephanie Butland

Stephanie Butland – Editor

I am an experienced, kind and thorough author, editor, and book coach, working with authors at all stages of their careers.

Overview

I'm the author of 2 memoirs and 7 novels. I have been writing professionally since 2010, and writing for writing’s sake since I could hold a crayon. (You might know me from ‘Found In A Bookshop.’) I’ve always been traditionally published, so I know the business well. Before I was published, I worked as a trainer, specialising in creativity and thinking skills. What I learned in those years equipped me well for my own writing career, and also taught me how to work effectively with people to help them to achieve their goals.

I work with authors at every stage of their careers. My approach is, first, to understand what your vision for your novel is. I can then help you to take your ideas, or scrappy drafts, or finished edit, and make it the best it can be before submission or independent publishing. The way we do this will depend on what’s best for you. It might be an editorial assessment, to set you off on your next draft with insight and focus; it might be a full developmental edit to show you how to restructure and hone the novel you have. Book coaching might sit alongside these processes, or it could be that coaching is the main focus of our work together. What’s important is what’s going to get your novel over the line, Let’s talk!

“Stephanie has given me so much confidence to keep going with this novel. She is a writing fairy godmother!” - Fiona, editorial assessment and book coaching

“Stephanie is just brilliantly creative, takes the time to understand what you want to achieve and inspires you with the confidence, techniques and encouragement to do so.” - Sophie, developmental edit and book coaching

“Working with Stephanie turned me from being someone who writes into a writer.” Zoe, editorial assessment and book coaching

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2014 — Present
I started working with writers when my own career was well established. I had gained an understanding of how traditional publishing works, and what editors are looking for in a manuscript they want to publish. I had also been working as a professional trainer since 2002, specialising in Dr Edward de Bono's work in creativity and thinking skills, so I have a deep understanding of how to approach the creative process in an effective way. I started small, fitting in manuscript assessments between my own writing and my day job. My reputation and client list grew, and in 2019 I became a full-time author and editor/mentor.

Headline Review

Jan, 2022 — Present
