Work experience

Self-employed

Jul, 2015 — Present

I am a freelance copy editor, proofreader, indexer, book designer (typesetter), eBook conversion specialist, and sermon transcriptionist. I specialize in Christian nonfiction, but I work with other genres of nonfiction as well, including self-help, IT, and health and fitness.

After thirteen years in project management at IBM and ten helping run the family business (where I managed the back office including all the marketing efforts), I transitioned to my current passion as owner of my editorial services business. Most of my clients are self-publishing authors, whose published books I worked on from start to finish, including help with uploading to the various platforms. I also currently work with publishers Free Grace Press, whose in-house style sheet I created, and Charisma House.

I am a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), the American Copy Editors Society (ACES), and The Christian PEN.

I reside in beautiful Mebane, North Carolina, with my husband, Rick, along with our nine children and son-in-law and granddaughter. As a homeschooling mom, I have graduated five students, with four in progress (I have also graded many, many book reports and essays). In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, journal writing, and reading Christian biographies.

As managing editor of this small publishing company, I am responsible for:
Assigning projects and ensuring the editing team meets its deadlines
Managing freelance editors and proofreaders
Meeting with project managers and the marketing director to keep all team members updated on work progress
Helping to create a project calendar
Supervising the content creation process from writing through editing and publishing

Level of communication was much less than expected. Only communicated via email and responses were short and lacking clarity. As a first time author (which was explained from the outset) I anticipated more direction and guidance from a copy editor. After completing her job, I found several areas that were not corrected. Unfortunately, these were not discovered until after publication. For examp...

Liz did an excellent job on the final proofread of my 40,000 word book on Christian discipleship. She was very meticulous and exceeded my expectations for a proofread by pointing out some additional considerations that would have been in line with a costlier copyedit. Her Christian maturity and knowledge were also very helpful to the subject matter of my particular project. It's obvious that sh...
