Overview
Notable projects include the Shorter French-English Dictionary for Harrap, Alasdair Gray, A Life in Pictures for Canongate Books, Chinese Urban Transformation by the Royal Institute of British Architecture and many school and college textbooks for Hodder Education.
I work with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator for design and typesetting. I can use more complex typesetting systems and have used Arbortext 3B2 in the past. I am used to working with different types of formats, from simple Microsoft documents through to highly structured data in XML. I use a variety of plug-ins in InDesign for languages with diacritics and right-to-left languages, and science and mathematical typesetting.
I am a member of the Picture Research Association and have researched and cleared rights on a huge variety of subjects from eco living to cookery to history. I can also commission illustrators and artists for projects.
I enjoy working on projects with many different types of publishers and also helping first-time authors through the self-publishing process.
The companies I regularly work for now include Oxford University Press, Hodder Education and Harper Collins.
I am happy to work on all sorts of projects from dictionaries, language and education textbooks through to coffee-table art books, poetry and children's books.

Chambers Harrap Publishers
I was the Design and Prepress Manager at Chambers Harrap, part of the Hachette group. My role was to set up and run a Prepress Department which involved bringing typesetting in-house and working closely with the other departments including editorial, XML, data and production teams to improve the workflow of the company. My department also worked on typesetting projects for other areas of the Hachette group around the world, including Larousse in France, Mexico, Italy and Brazil, and Houghton Mifflin in the US.
