Sarah Ali

Sarah Ali – Editor

Linguist, writer, editor and proofreader, specialising in English as a Foreign Language, education, and developmental psychology.

Overview

I grew up surrounded by language (English teacher as a parent!) and went on to study languages at university (French and German) and went onto live in Austria for 8 years. From then on I've been involved in working with language either through translating, teaching , teaching materials design, editing or proofreading. My main area of expertise is English as a Foreign Language teaching, in the fields of English for Academic Purposes, Young Learners (from 3 upwards), English for Speakers of Other Languages and Business English, as well as course and materials design. I have also worked extensively in editing and proofreading materials for publication both for commercial and academic purposes.

Writing can be a very personal affair, especially in terms of time invested to find the right words. That's where I come in: I can help you find those elusive words, whether it be in an academic paper, creating the best atmosphere and characters, or dotting the i's and crossing the t's adding the final polish to your work. I view writing, editing and proofreading as a conversation with the client. I start any new work with a call or meeting to establish the vision of the work (i.e. genre and register). I can work electronically or with paper, using Track Changes or directly marking on the copy. Where appropriate I offer a selection of alternatives, to ensure the best possible option. After working on a piece, I arrange a follow-up call to address any queries.

I also work with an international college preparing students for UK university study. In this role, I am responsible for English Language courses: the planning of materials, assessments and everyday running of modules. I also manage tutors and those that teach on the courses I am responsible for. I support tutors in their teaching, assessment preparation and marking. I run standardisation sessions and monitor marks to ensure that a high standard is kept.

In addition, I coordinate Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) within the college. I arrange workshops and sessions for tutors across all subjects taught, on using technology in teaching. I also offer sessions on the theory behind using technology in the classroom and Blended Learning.
