Overview
I began my career editing newspaper features and financial wire copy on the foreign services desk of The Japan Economic Journal in Tokyo, then held a number of reporting, editing, and marketing roles in New York and Denver. Now I focus on copyediting, proofreading, and substantive editing of nonfiction books, journal articles, newsletters, and professional learning courses.
I'm full-time freelance so once I accept a gig, it instantly becomes the most important thing on my calendar. I'll provide a sample edit so you can judge, risk-free, if you think we'll work well together.
Every project is different. Just like your hair stylist, I can provide anything from a quick trim to a new personality. Some recent gigs have followed this successful pattern:
1) A developmental critique of the big picture. Does the book make sense? Can it make more sense? The deliverable is a memo and/or marginal notes. Then, back to you for more work!
2) First round of copyediting. Some would call this a stylistic edit or line edit. I’ll attack any grammatical or formatting issues but I’ll also be looking to improve readability while preserving your voice. Then ... back to you for more work!
3) Second, nuts-and-bolts round of copyediting to prepare the manuscript for layout. One more review by you, then we stick a fork in it and hand off to your designer.
4) If you are using a traditional process, proofreading is an important step following layout and I can bundle this into my bid.
I do not use AI for anything, ever. If I suggest a change, that's 100% me striving to help you connect with readers.
I'm a member of ACES, Editors Canada, and the Apostrophe Protection Society. I have a BA in semiotics from Brown University and a Master of Nonprofit Management from Regis University.
"You're the first person I've ever showed any of my writing to, which was a scary step for me, but your advice and guidance is already helping this thing take shape in my mind." — First-time writer
"As a published author, I’ve worked with several editors over the years and Eric is one of the best. He digs deep to understand content, has a great eye for ways to make any text better, and doesn’t let anything slip past him. He’s also a great writer himself, so he can lend a hand with a better turn of a phrase as needed. I’d recommend Eric to anyone in need of freelance writing or editing." — Nonprofit CEO
"I wrote a 500-page history while quarantined with a working spouse and a two-year-old. I was in no mood to manage manuscript preparation on my own. Eric rid the MS of typos and formatting inconsistencies, even in difficult technical terminology. He made wording suggestions that respected my subject and style and returned everything ahead of schedule, shaving weeks if not months off the process.” — University professor
