Eric Hubler

Eric Hubler – Editor

AP-trained copy editor now editing and proofreading for newsletters, university-affiliated authors, and of course my fab Reedsy clients!

Overview

I began my career editing newspaper features and financial wire copy on the foreign desk of The Japan Economic Journal in Tokyo, then held a number of reporting, editing, and marketing roles in New York and Denver. Now I focus on editing of nonfiction books, journal articles, newsletters, and professional learning courses.

I'm full-time freelance so once I accept a gig, it instantly becomes the most important thing on my calendar.

Every project is different and every bid is bespoke. If it's an agent you're after, we'll polish your proposal and sample chapters; if self-publishing, we'll ensure the entire manuscript is in perfect shape to move into layout. I'll provide a sample edit so you can judge, risk-free, if my skills meet your needs. Options include copyediting, developmental critique, stylistic editing, structural editing, line editing, academic editing, and proofreading.

I do not use AI. If I suggest a change, that's 100% me striving to help you connect with readers.

I'm a member of ACES, Editors Canada, the Editorial Freelancers Association, and the Apostrophe Protection Society. I have a BA in semiotics from Brown University and a Master of Nonprofit Management from Regis University.

"You're the first person I've ever showed any of my writing to, which was a scary step for me, but your advice and guidance is already helping this thing take shape in my mind." — First-time writer

"As a published author, I’ve worked with several editors over the years and Eric is one of the best. He digs deep to understand content, has a great eye for ways to make any text better, and doesn’t let anything slip past him. He’s also a great writer himself, so he can lend a hand with a better turn of a phrase as needed. I’d recommend Eric to anyone in need of freelance writing or editing." — Nonprofit CEO

"I wrote a 500-page history while quarantined with a working spouse and a two-year-old. I was in no mood to manage manuscript preparation on my own. Eric rid the MS of typos and formatting inconsistencies, even in difficult technical terminology. He made wording suggestions that respected my subject and style and returned everything ahead of schedule, shaving weeks if not months off the process.” — University professor

So I hired Eric because I had about 165,000 words I'd written about a trip I took 10 years ago and I needed someone else to help me make sense of it all and wrangle it into something that actually had some kind of narrative arc. Eric's advice and candour was super helpful in allowing me to see t...

I am so grateful to Eric for his help in this process. This is my first book and I needed a lot of guidance, which he very generously gave. Eric is meticulous. Nothing gets by him, and the insight he has offered has been invaluable. Eric will be my go-to editor for any future projects.

I'm so happy you chose me for this edit, Kelleen! I learned a lot (I think we both did) and I look forward to impressing guests with a copy of Tbilisi: Then and Now on my coffee table. Because of t...

Eric was patient and very professional when working with me, an inexperienced author. My transcript needed more work than he had guessed but he took it all in stride, meticulously checking my references and providing much needed guidance. I am forever grateful to have found him.

Siobhan, your book is one of the most important pieces of writing I have ever read and I hope it reaches the audience that needs it. True, it was a lot of work, but the reason I was excited you cho...

What, in your opinion, is the most important job of a developmental editor?

As a liaison between author and audience, developmental editor needs to hold three perspectives at once: the writer's, the reader's, and their own. Then of course there are the characters' perspectives. That's a lot of thoughts and points of view to have in one's head at one time! The developmen...

What types of writing courses or workshops have been most beneficial for your development?

I have been taking online editing courses through Simon Fraser University and have found the course content to be helpful with my Reedsy work. For example, I proposed a developmental edit on a historical novel that really was not ready for copyediting, the author agreed, and the transformation fr...

How do you handle feedback from authors who may be resistant to revisions or suggestions?

I provided copyediting on a coffee-table-style book that didn't have a ton of text, but the text it did have could sometimes be complicated because of the way the author handled non-English terms. In some instances a word could be written four different ways: the original non-English spelling; an...
