Overview
Nonfiction has been my thing since college, when I was reading Joan Didion, Ryszard Kapuściński, Philip Caputo, Tom Wolfe, and Hunter S. Thompson. I was a feature writing intern at The Washington Post and The Boston Globe and a staff reporter at The Denver Post, and I got into long-form editing as a staff writer/editor with an education nonprofit.
Now I'm full-time freelance so the moment I take on a gig, it becomes the most important thing on my calendar and you become my most important client ever.
If it's an agent you're after, we'll polish your proposal and sample chapters. If self-publishing, we'll ensure the entire manuscript is in perfect shape to move into layout. I'll provide a sample edit so you can judge, risk-free, if my skills meet your needs. Options include copyediting, developmental critique, stylistic editing, structural editing, line editing, academic editing, and proofreading.
I'm a member of ACES, Editors Canada, the Editorial Freelancers Association, and the Apostrophe Protection Society. I have a BA in semiotics from Brown University and a Master of Nonprofit Management from Regis University.
I prefer not to work with authors who have used AI in preparing their manuscripts. In cases where "AI has been used as a drafting aid but all ideas are the author's," I would say: not possible.
"You're the first person I've ever showed any of my writing to, which was a scary step for me, but your advice and guidance is already helping this thing take shape in my mind." — First-time writer
"As a published author, I’ve worked with several editors over the years and Eric is one of the best. He digs deep to understand content, has a great eye for ways to make any text better, and doesn’t let anything slip past him. He’s also a great writer himself, so he can lend a hand with a better turn of a phrase as needed. I’d recommend Eric to anyone in need of freelance writing or editing." — Nonprofit CEO
"I wrote a 500-page history while quarantined with a working spouse and a two-year-old. I was in no mood to manage manuscript preparation on my own. Eric rid the MS of typos and formatting inconsistencies, even in difficult technical terminology. He made wording suggestions that respected my subject and style and returned everything ahead of schedule, shaving weeks if not months off the process.” — University professor
