Stefani Ruper

Stefani Ruper – Editor

Nonfiction editor who left Harvard to help health, psychology & business leaders turn their big ideas into brilliant, life-changing books

Overview

Writing is tricky business. You have years of experience and something wise or helpful to say—but once you start putting pen to paper, you realize there are nearly infinite ways to say it. Only one of them is the best. How do you find just that right one?

That's where I come in. I help authors who want to speak clearly, reach readers, and make a difference find the ideal way to bring their ideas fully into clear, compelling view.

I wrote and published my first book when I was 24. Since then, I've written or ghostwritten dozens, and I've developmental and line edited many dozens more.

—What it’s like to work with me—

• Deep respect for the your voice and intent (I never make an edit that would compromise an author's vision or personality)

• Rigorous, thoughtful feedback grounded in careful listening

• Clear, direct diagnosis of what’s working and what isn’t

• Practical guidance you can actually use

—My experience—

I have...

• edited or ghostwritten dozens of nonfiction books, including projects published by major houses (Penguin, HarperCollins, Avery, Little)

• helped several book proposals get six-figure bids at auction (in fact, every proposal I've worked on has gotten multiple six-figure bids)

• worked as a ghostwriter at Harvard University

• trained in communicating complex ideas clearly at the BBC, Oxford, and Harvard.

—My expertise—

I work in non-fiction broadly, specializing in psychology, health, and business.

My deepest experience is in business (leadership, performance, adaptability), psychology (trauma therapy, mental disorder, disability, resilience, stress management), health (women's health, fertility, type 2 diabetes, blood sugar management, weight management, skin health, autoimmune disease, general nutrition), and philosophy (early in my career, I got a PhD in philosophy at Oxford). But I am very widely read and studied, and I'd be glad to talk with you about your topic to assess fit.

—Working style & testimonial—

I work with authors in a way that’s careful, respectful, and attuned to what they’re trying to say. I dive into their work early in our scheduled time and stay thoughtfully with it throughout, constantly revising my own work to help them clarify, persuade, and reach readers better and better.

I meet every client where they're at. I can take sharp scalpel to your work, if you're seeking deep, idea-level feedback, or I can do a more gentle, surface-level polish that helps what's already there sing.

Clients often come to me when they need a collaborator who can see their thinking clearly and strengthen the manuscript without flattening their voice.

A book recently published by Amplify states in the Acknowledgments:

“Stefani, thank you for all of your guidance, ideas, conversation, and brilliant writing during this project. This would not have come to fruition without you.”

Another published by Penguin says:

“Stefani, thank you for helping me bring this manuscript to life. Your talent and listening skills are unmatched.”

I'd love to explore if I can be an equally helpful editor for you.

So incredibly helpful! I know it's a paid service, but I greatly appreciated Stefani's help, expertise, and level of care more than she knows. You can tell that Stefani is critical but in an effort to make your project that much better. I never want to feel like I'm right at the cost of making ...

Stefani is a fantastic editor. I've come back to her across multiple rounds of an unconventional, hard-to-categorize project, and every time she goes above and beyond in the care and attention she brings. Her comments are detailed and genuinely useful. She reads like a reader, flagging the exact ...

I'm the definition of a newbie to the authoring game. I had just finished the "release candidate" draft of my mental health manuscript when I found Reedsy, with almost no idea of what the publishing process actually involved (and honestly, I still don't in a lot of ways). After reading up a bit, ...
