Lisa Rodgers

Lisa Rodgers – Editor

I'm a NYC-based literary agent with over ten years' experience in publishing. I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and romance.

Overview

I have over a decade of experience working in traditional and digital publishing. I've worked with dozens clients to edit and sell their manuscripts to publishers, both Big 5 and medium-sized indies. During editing, I help authors figure out plot holes, strengthen characterization and romantic-arcs, develop foreshadowing, fine-tune various aspects of their manuscripts, note continuity issues, and craft their manuscripts for the marketplace.

Before I begin a project, I like to ask the author what their goals are. Not every author has the same needs! Sometimes they know exactly what they need, sometimes they just know something isn't working. I provide the same level of detail to all projects, but talking with the author in advance helps me ensure I provide helpful and actionable feedback.

In addition to noting what isn't working, I provide suggestions on how to address those issues. My feedback is always that -- suggestions. There are many ways to solve a problem, and many authors have found creative ways to tackle the same issue after thinking over my feedback.

Depending on the type of editorial work requested, the type feedback you receive will be different.

An editorial assessment will be a letter of my thoughts about your manuscript: strengths, weaknesses, character development, plot, etc.

A developmental edit includes that, as well as in-line comments and/or Track Changes entered directly into the manuscript file. I'm also happy to respond to questions about my notes, to clarify or brainstorm possible solutions.

Proofreading has in-line comments and/or Track changes entered directly into the manuscript file, but no commentary on strengths, weaknesses, character development, plot, etc.

For the three services above, I'm happy to consider full projects as well as partial projects (first 3 chapters, first 50 pages, etc).

A query letter review includes reviewing the query letter and offering suggestions to make it stronger. I may ask for a full synopsis (with the ending spoiled) to help with that. I can also offer thoughts on the synopsis; if you'd like that in addition to the query letter, please ask.

Please note, I don't work on manuscripts that have been created with the use of ChatGPT or similar services. I prefer to work on manuscripts that have been wholly created by a human.

I work primarily with science fiction and fantasy authors, with the occasional mystery, romance, or YA author thrown in. I take a manuscript from Draft Zero to submission-ready, craft pitch letters, research editors to submit to, handle contract negotiations, and offer career advice.

Lisa was very professional with excellent feedback! She was good about pointing out both what was working and what could be improved, while keeping my vision for the piece in mind. Lisa recommended further reading based on my draft that could both help and inspire. She had an in depth knowledge ...
