Overview

Hi, I'm Rob, and I've been helping authors build bestsellers for over a decade.

I've worked for the likes of Bonnier Books UK, Joffe Books, David Fickling Books and Rebellion Publishing, on everything from commercial fiction and non-fiction through to graphic novels, YA, science fiction and fantasy.

Some of the authors I've worked with include Sir Philip Pullman, Jamie Smart,Holly Black, Stephen Mulhern, Wilbur Smith, Heather Morris, Donna Ashworth, Yoon Ha Lee, and many more. I managed the marketing for Disney's UK publishing program for Star Wars and Marvel for a number of years, and most recently I worked with digital-first megastars such as Joy Ellis.

My areas of expertise include marketing strategy, social media management, digital marketing (including Amazon and Meta), brand management, copywriting, and creative direction (including marketing assets, cover direction, author branding etc).

Publishing can be confusing and difficult to navigate. Ads, newsletters, social media, blurbs, metadata, launch timelines… it’s hard to know what actually matters, and what you can ignore.

My consultancy service is designed to give you clarity, direction, and confidence, without selling you expensive services you don’t need.

It's a focused, strategic deep-dive into your book / series. I’ll help you understand what’s working, what isn’t working, and the exact next steps you need to take.

Launched multiple bestselling titles for authors including Holly Black, Stephen Mulhern and multi-award winner Nathaniel Lessore. Led marketing activity across Disney publishing programme, including launch of international bestseller Where’s Spidey (350,000 TCM to date).

David Fickling Books

Implemented best-in-class campaigns for the likes of Jamie Smart, Sir Philip Pullman and Sir Paul Nurse. Launched highly successful campaigns across YouTube, Meta and Amazon.

Rebellion Publishing

Jul, 2015 — Feb, 2020 (over 4 years)
Coordinated marketing, publicity and editorial teams to deliver projects across four imprints, focusing on sci-fi, fantasy, horror and graphic novels, working with authors such as Yoon Ha Lee, Dave Hutchinson, Chris Fowler, Rob Williams, Tom Palmer, and many more. Acted as brand guardian for beloved UK comics properties including Roy of the Rovers.

Projects

Where's Spidey?

As part of Disney's publishing program for Bonnier Books UK imprint Studio Press, Where's Spidey was a project that required extensive digital marketing (especially around Meta and Amazon Advertising), as well as a wide reaching influencer campaign and extensive seasonal promotions.

I ran the entire project on the marketing and publicity side, and fanned the flames of the title's initial sales success to transform it into one of the best-selling children's titles of the year in 2022, and a trend setter in the broader search and find category. A tremendous success, and a campaign that drove many hundreds of thousands of sales.

The Household by Stacey Halls

I led Bonnier Books' marketing team to deliver a standout launch campaign for Stacey Halls' return to historical fiction The Household.

This was a hardcover launch, and as such the aims were to reintroduce an author who had taken some time out after a string of bestsellers, and re-engage her readership with an intriguing and creative campaign.

The campaign itself included digital and OOH advertising, events, paid and organic social, and a string of partnerships managed by my team.

Karma by Boy George

Karma was the much anticipated biography from iconic Culture Club front man Boy George. The title appeared late in the schedule, and I led Bonnier Books UK's adult marketing team to deliver a high-impact campaign in time for Christmas.

Alongside the expected mix of digital, outdoor and broadcast advertising, our campaign also included an exclusive influencer event at Waterstones Piccadilly, with a Boy George branded double decker bus providing the transport through London's West End.

The project achieved bestseller status in an extremely competitive Christmas landscape, and Karma has gone on to sell extremely well ever since.

Max Magic by Stephen Mulhern

Max Magic was a major launch for a debut celebrity author. The project aimed to position Stephen Mulhern as a children's author, achieve bestseller status, and establish the first book in a three book series. We also wanted to weave in messaging around reluctant reading, gifting, and 'reading as magic'.

I ran the marketing and publicity campaign for this project, which included a full cross-channel marketing mix (online, OOH, paid and organic social media, influencer campaign, etc) and extensive publicity across print and broadcast channels.

Max Magic was a rip-roaring success, with the title achieving Sunday Times Bestseller status and setting up multiple future bestsellers in the series.
