Rick Chillot – Editor

Developmental editor; 30+ years commercial publishing experience; currently taking only graphic novel/graphic nonfiction or prior clients.

Overview

Let's make the best possible version of your book.

Writing a book manuscript is hard, but it doesn't have to be solitary. Whether you're a first-time writer or a published author, I can help you to clarify your vision and take your project from good to great! Here's what I offer in an editorial assessment or developmental edit:

• A seasoned eye.
I've been making a living in commercial publishing for over 30 years, and I've worked on hundreds of manuscripts of all sorts. I've been involved in all editorial aspects of book making, from sharpening a vague idea into a compelling narrative to scanning a polished manuscript for errors.

• A sympathetic ear.
I've worked with first-time writers, published authors, and everyone in between. And I've been a writer myself. I understand the unique challenges that authors struggle with. I'll listen to your goals and intentions for your project, and I'll make sure my feedback is specific and constructive.

• Diverse experience.
As an editor for lifestyle brands like Men's Health and Prevention, I've shaped potentially dry nonfiction projects to be entertaining and illuminating. More recently I've edited books for Rockridge Press on topics ranging from mindfulness and social anxiety to witchcraft and stoicism.

At Quirk Books (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children) I tackled graphic novels as well as prose fiction and nonfiction that posed unique challenges, like blending history with fantasy, or crafting narratives around DIY projects.

For private clients, I've developed memoir, science fiction, thrillers, and even a yoga guidebook.

• Support and encouragement.
Yes, writing is hard. But I like to remind my clients that every revision they make is another opportunity to deploy their creativity and express their ideas. I'm on your side and I want you to be confident and happy!

If that all sounds good, send me a message and let me know what you're working on!

Best,

Rick

Work experience

Self-employed

Jun, 2022 — Present

I freelanced full-time as an editor and writer through most of the 2000's, again during the pandemic lockdown, and I'm back to it now. I'm not siloed in a single genre or style; I work on a wide variety of projects and formats, which gives me flexibility and new insights that I can bring to your project.

Insight Editions

Jan, 2022 — May, 2022 (4 months)

I worked with high profile licensors like DC Comics, Mojang (Minecraft), and Sega to create coookbooks and other licensed projects. It was a blast, but I missed working directly with authors so I returned to freelancing.

Quirk Books

Jan, 2013 — Sep, 2019 (over 6 years)

Quirk Books pioneered mashup fiction by publishing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. While there as an acquiring editor I worked with first-time writers as well as published authors like Grady Hendrix (My Best Friend's Exorcism, The Final Girl's Support Group), Doogie Horner (Die Hard Christmas), and Carol Liefer (Seinfeld, the Larry Sanders Show). I edited licensed projects (the William Shakespeare's Star Wars series), comics-related projects (League of Regrettable Superheroes, Spectacular Sisterhood of Superheroes), kids' books (the Nick and Tesla series), a YA novel (Garrison Girl) and a few books that defy categorization! I also acquired and edited Quirk's first original graphic novels.

Self-employed

Sep, 1998 — Present

I've freelanced for extended periods of time in between staff jobs. Past clients included Men's Health, Prevention, Health, Psychology Today, Mental Floss, Parenting, and White Wolf Publishing. In 2022 I've edited a slew of self-improvement and wellness titles for Rockridge Press (Callisto Media) on topics including self-esteem, intuitive eating, stoicism, energy healing, witchcraft, and medicinal plants. I've also done developmental editing for private clients who've written memoirs, science fiction, and thrillers.

Rick was exceptionally helpful and professional in our collaboration. He read and reviewed a novella I had written, with a view to adapting it into a graphic novel. Rick gave my text a very close reading and was very detailed in his explanations of what he thought was working what was not. I showed him some sample pages of what the comic would look like with an artist I have been working with. ...

Rick is an incredible thinker who took my characters and story and really *got* what I was trying to do and where I wanted to go with them. He helped me see my characters in a new light, brought insights to them that I just could never have accessed on my own given my background. I return to his insights over and over again while writing, and I know that as long as he's in my corner I'll find m...
