Richard Martin

Richard Martin – Editor

Author whisperer. I help people develop their books and other publications. How can I support your writing project?

Overview

Since 2014, I have supported authors on their writing projects; mostly books but also articles, web content, blog posts and marketing materials. My primary focus is on nonfiction publications.

I am the author of Mean Streets and Raging Bulls, co-author of The Neo-Generalist, ghostwriter of several books and editor of many others. My personal writing experiences inform the guidance I provide to clients, alongside what I can offer as a developmental editor, copy editor and proofreader.

With most clients, I work with them from concept development to the completion of a finished manuscript. This requires me to fulfil a variety of roles as sounding board, critical friend, editor, coach and mentor. For other clients, they simply want help making a start on their projects, identifying an overarching structure and receiving feedback and guidance on their initial writing. I also provide manuscript critiques as a one-off service, making suggestions for improvements, restructuring, additions and omissions.

Many of the books I work on defy simple categorisation. They are multidisciplinary, hybridising different genres. Several, for example, combine commentary on business theory and practice with psychology, memoir, sports, literary criticism and film analysis. In such cases, personal stories and cultural, historical and socio-political references all enrich the author's argument.

In the mid-to-late 1990s, I freelanced for UK publishing houses, working on reference, cultural and film titles. The latter allowed me to draw on my academic background in film studies. I subsequently worked in a variety of industries in the public, private and nonprofit sectors, specialising in information governance, knowledge management and change leadership. My professional and research experiences allow me to offer a range of subject matter expertise to the authors I assist.

I work with clients from around the world. Several choose to write in English even though it is not their first language. I bring a native speaker's fluency to their work.
