Overview
If there's one thing I'd like all our clients to know, it's this:
If it's early in your experience as an author, whether you are picked up by a publishing house or you self-publish, unless you contract with someone like me, you may not have the chance to work closely with a professional editor.
Unless you are a celebrity with a memoir, a successful CEO, or already a bestselling novelist, dispel the notion that a publishing house is going to hold your hand - either during manuscript development or during promotion. If you get editorial help at all, that person could be a recent graduate who brings copyediting skills from the school paper or yearbook.
If you want the experience - and results - of working with a veteran pro editor - hire one before you publish.
And if you're self-publishing (or building your own imprint), hiring someone like me during manuscript development is the smartest career move you can make.
Perhaps the most cost-effective service I can provide you would be to read your partial or full manuscript draft and give you comprehensive development notes and suggestions on storytelling, marketability, production, or any other phase of the project that has you stuck. We can usually get this evaluation done in a few weeks.

Work experience
Self-employed
I began my professional writing career by editing college textbooks in the Computer Information Systems curriculum for South-Western. I then wrote how-to texts on computer applications for publishers such as Peachpit, Sybex, and John Wiley. At that time, my agent was Waterside Productions, which was one of the largest reps of nonfiction titles in the world. I wrote more than 30 titles, including PMP Certification for Dummies and Murphy's Laws of Excel.
I worked in the computer graphics field, as well, and I wrote several books on graphics applications such as PowerPoint and Photoshop. With my IT background, I undertook writing and editing of government proposals for corporate clients in IT, aerospace, healthcare, and entertainment.
I'm a longtime board member of the Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC).
I've recently returned from living in Kenya for two years, where my wife undertook work in wildlife conservation and child welfare. While she was doing that, I kept writing!
I established and manage my own small-press imprint, LaPuerta Books and Media, which has released a dozen titles in ebook, print, and audiobooks.
