Richard Baggaley

Richard Baggaley – Editor

A highly experienced book commissioning and development editor who has worked for Open UP, Princeton UP, McGill-Queen's UP, and Wiley.

Overview

I have over 40 years of experience as a development editor, commissioning editor and publisher - and have worked on books in both the university press and commercial publishing worlds (Open University Press, Wiley, Princeton University Press, McGill-Queen's University Press and London Publishing Partnership). I've worked mostly in the social sciences and humanities - with economics/business, public policy/politics and history being my main stomping grounds.

Having reviewed and edited thousands of book proposals and hundreds of book manuscripts, I now know that the thing I enjoy most (and hopefully am rather good at) is working with authors to develop book proposals, and editing/developing draft scripts – making them ready for submission to a publisher.

Work experience

McGill-Queen's University Press

Jun, 2017 — Present

Established a UK presence for the Canadian publisher McGill-Queen's University Press, commissioning books in politics and history.

London Publishing Partnership

Jun, 2010 — Present

I helped to establish this publishing services company, which initially specialised in working with think tanks and research institutes, as a packager. LPP now also publishes books under its own imprint in economics, public policy, business, management and law.

Princeton University Press

Aug, 1999 — Jan, 2010 (over 10 years)

Set up the first UK office for Princeton University Press, near Oxford, and ran this for over ten years. Commissioned books in economics and finance.

John Wiley and Sons

Aug, 1992 — Jul, 1999 (almost 7 years)

I joined Wiley as Publisher in the new Professional Division, where I built a new list of books in economics and finance, and was responsible for a team that also covered psychology and business. I later became Director of Journals Development.

Open University Press

Aug, 1986 — Jul, 1992 (almost 6 years)

I joined as a commissioning editor, working in life sciences (my degree subject) and geology. I then started a list in health studies, which grew very quickly, and I became Editorial Director.
