Rebecca Eskildsen

Rebecca Eskildsen – Editor

Developmental Editor. I have worked with many award-winning and bestselling authors to ready their books for submission and publication.

Overview

Experience: My career started in the small press world, with Epicenter Press and Coffeetown Press (and its genre imprint Camel Press). I reviewed submissions for acquisition for both of these independent publishers, acquired titles, provided developmental edits on acquired books, and copyedited manuscripts for publication. Then I moved to the literary agent side, first working for JABberwocky Literary Agency selling foreign rights for the full catalog of titles, which was largely focused on science fiction and fantasy. I moved to Writers House Literary Agency in 2017, and since then I have reviewed countless queries and worked with many Writers House clients to develop their proposals or full manuscripts for submission to publishers. These authors have gone on to traditionally publish their books and win accolades including Kirkus Best Book of the Year, Goodreads Choice Awards, NYT bestseller status, and even a Newbery Honor and a Pura Belpré Honor.

What I can do for you:

Developmental edits: I review the overall structure of a book and help the author figure out which threads are incomplete, which might be extraneous to your plot entirely, which characters need more development, and how you might go about achieving this revision. I'll read your manuscript and write up a detailed editorial letter kindly identifying weaknesses and suggesting fixes where possible. My editorial letters tend to be 4-8 pages long and highlight big-picture concerns with actionable feedback.

Query Letter Review: If you are readying your query package to send out to agents, I have plenty of experience reading queries from the agent side (and the indie press side!) and I know what a query letter should look like as well as what will grab an agent's attention. As long as you have no interest in querying me, I am able to review your query letter and offer whatever feedback you're seeking, from big picture thoughts to line edits.

*Please note that since I am also a literary agent, I cannot consider any paid work for anyone who wishes to query me for representation.*
