Philip Marino

Philip Marino – Editor

Commercial nonfiction specialist with 10+ years experience in acquisitions, editorial, and marketing at New York's leading publishing houses

Overview

After graduating from University of Chicago, I began my publishing career at W.W. Norton & Co, where— alongside renowned publishing director, Robert Weil—I helped relaunch the storied Liveright imprint, growing a list that had been dormant for nearly 40 years into one that now includes over twenty New York Times bestsellers and multiple Pulitzer Prize finalists/winners.

As Liveright's Associate Editor and Marketing Director, I acquired a wide range of nonfiction, most notably in the areas of philosophy, sports, technology, comedy, music and current events. Notable authors included the longtime New York Times “Frugal Traveler” columnist, Seth Kugel; leading war correspondent and contributing editor to Vanity Fair, Janine di Giovanni; CNN contributor and former Deputy Director of the CIA Counterterrorist Center and FBI National Security Branch, Philip Mudd; #1 New York Times bestselling author of Forrest Gump, Winston Groom; one of the most influential philosophers of science in the past two decades, Philip Kitcher; and Evelyn Fox Keller, a professor emerita at MIT and recipient of both the MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships.

In 2017, I joined Little, Brown & Company as a Senior Editor, acquiring and publishing books in the areas of memoir, sports, science, music, and business. Notable authors included Democratic presidential candidate, Julián Castro; legendary sports journalist, John Feinstein; renowned jazz historian, Gary Giddins; Hall-of-fame quarterback, Joe Namath; bestselling science writer, Sam Kean; co-founder of Netflix, Marc Randolph; and championship head coach of the Toronto Raptors, Nick Nurse.

Since 2022, I've been at Morehouse Publishing, which is the trade division of the official publisher of the Episcopal Church. Here, I'm charged with building a list at the intersection of faith and social justice, business, self-help, leadership, personal growth, and wellness

While I have edited and published fiction, my expertise is in nonfiction—both in the proposal and manuscript phases—and my approach is holistic, meaning I advise not only from an editorial perspective, but also one heavily influenced by experiences in marketing and publicity. I am selective in terms of which projects I take on and only agree to work together if I genuinely believe I can add significant value to your team.

I am so glad I found Phil to help with my query letter. He is a sharp editor, a diplomatic communicator, and an amazing collaborator. Beyond that, I felt like he genuinely wanted to help with my project. I'll be honest: I was feeling pretty daunted by the process of pitching my book to agents. It...
