Penny Carroll

Penny Carroll – Editor

Sensitive and supportive editor for writers of romance and women's fiction. Developmental edits, copyedits and proofreading. I love love!

Overview

Hi! I'm Penny, an experienced and friendly editor devoted to helping authors tell their stories with confidence and clarity.

My style of editing is 'author-sensitive' – that is, I believe in empowering authors with supportive feedback and encouragement rather than tough love or harsh critiques. As a writer myself – I've spent two decades writing and editing for some of Australia's top women's magazines – I know how intimidating it can be to share your work with a stranger, and I never take your trust for granted.

I offer structural edits, copyedits and proofreading, and I love working on all types of stories, from rom-coms to cosy mysteries to crime.

My favourite part of the job is chatting to an author after they've received their edits back and hearing how my detailed feedback has unlocked fresh perspective and energy for their story. So, if you're feeling overwhelmed and don't know where to start, need help seeing the big picture, or just want a friendly, experienced editor on your team as you work towards your publishing goals, reach out! I'd love to help you tell your story.

Testimonials:

“I absolutely love working with Penny. She’s incredibly experienced and talented, and I have complete trust in her to give me honest, thoughtful feedback while polishing my manuscript. I genuinely look forward to reading through her comments and suggestions – they always elevate the story.” – Jade May, author of the Eden series

“Penny is both the gentlest and the most sharp-minded editor I’ve worked with, and I can’t recommend her highly enough. She frames all her comments in a positive and supportive way, and nothing feels overwhelming or even remotely discouraging. If you want to take your book from good to phenomenal, Penny is your go-to editor.” – Natalie Murray, author of Love Just In

“Penny has a special knack for understanding the essence of your manuscript and what it’s trying to say, and helping tease out that brilliance via deeper characterisation and more engaging/realistic plots, while having immense respect for voice. Penny is my secret weapon and I refuse to write anything without her expert assistance!” – Karina May, author of Duck a l'Orange for Breakfast
