Work experience

Book Cover Designer

Self-employed
January, 2019 – Present (about 2 years)

After my years as design manager for the Springer Nature book cover design team I decided to get back to my roots doing what I love to do most: to design book covers. Good times!

Design Manager

Springer Nature
February, 2015 – January, 2019 (almost 4 years)

Management and mentoring of the Book Cover Design teams for Palgrave Macmillan and for Macmillan Higher Education, 7 Designers from Senior to Junior levels and from different areas of the business and the flexible freelance resources. I have led my team through a few mergers without loosing their minds and anyone that have been through one knows just how hard that can be! A very hands-on manager, I never stopped designing book covers, and my tireless mentoring and coaching through direct pro-active feedback have been fundamental in keeping a healthy working environment for creatives and building rapport between team mates.

Managing Designer

Springer Nature
March, 2014 – February, 2015 (11 months)

Design of Scholarly and Professional jackets, one-to-one catch-ups and coaching of line report and mentoring of the Design team. Supervision of the ever-expanding global workload and systems. Watching over our relationship with the Editorial, running inductions for new Editorial Assistants and Commissioning Editors and arranging catch-up meetings. Managing performance and administering feedback to the team, and also to Editors and authors as part of our customer centred structure. Frequently liaising with Production to discuss necessary changes and developments to our process. Assembling resources and assigning training when needed. Management of the UK Scholarly book cover team.

Senior Designer

Macmillan Publishers
September, 2011 – March, 2014 (over 2 years)

Worked intensively towards a sturdier visual identity for bespoke cover aesthetics and developed the Palgrave Macmillan Professional Business cover manifesto.

Senior Designer

Egmont Publishing
April, 2009 – September, 2011 (over 2 years)

Art direction, briefing and commissioning of design studios and illustrators, and design work for Egmont’s children’s publishing list.

Conscious Collaboration

Ben Emmens

When collaboration works, the results can be breath-taking! But it doesn’t always deliver on its potential. Collaboration has been defined as "an unnatural act practiced by non-consenting adults". And often that’s exactly what it is! Some collaboration can be painfully difficult with the result that problems are either ignored or smoothed over until the collaboration falters or disintegrates, ... read more

Deviance in Neo-Victorian Culture: Canon, Transgression, Innovation

This book argues that ‘deviance’ represents a central issue in neo-Victorian culture, and that the very concept of neo-Victorianism is based upon the idea of ‘diverging’ from accepted notions regarding the nineteenth-century frame of mind. However, the study of the ways in which the Victorian age has been revised by contemporary authors does not only entail analogies with the present but prove... read more

Maul Hewish
He had a bit of a backlog to catch up on before he could tackle my project, and that's the only blight on my experience, and it wasn't entirely his fault. Times are crazy right now. When he was finally clear to get stuck in, Rocko was wonderful to work with. He has great taste and isn't shy of trying new things. He listens and takes feedback on board, we made something really special and that ...

Mr. Spigolon is a really great and caring person and a GREAT cover designer. I am so glad that he decided to work with me. You can't and won't go wrong having him design your cover. Everyone designs a bit differently. Look at his 'style' and act accordingly. He will take feedback and go out of his way to design the cover you desire.
