Overview
I'm a former YA and MG editor at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (now Clarion Books at HarperCollins). I've worked with authors like Lexi Ryan (NYT bestselling author of These Hollow Vows) and Makiia Lucier (author of Goodreads Choice Nominee Dragonfruit). I specialize in worldbuilding and developing magic systems. I'll find the gaps in your magic and help you fix them!
For me, the best part of being an editor is helping an author bring their vision to life. I want to make your story shine by asking questions that make you think about your book in a new way. And I want to let you know what I love! You'll get plenty of comments about things that make me laugh, cry, swoon, or throw a pillow in anger (in a good way!).
A little about me: I have a dog named Elias (also answers to Green Bean, Nugget, Bubbaloo, and a million other nicknames) who snores on my lap while I'm editing and only sometimes uses my laptop as a pillow to get extra scratches when I'm trying to work. I love binging a good show or having a movie marathon. I hate drinking water but I'm addicted to seltzer. The bubbles make a difference!
Testimonial:
"One of the most difficult parts of being a writer is knowing the story on the page can't quite measure up to the one in your head. Good editors help close that gap, and Nic is among the very best. Every suggestion, big and small, resonated with me and made my book stronger and tighter. She's a truly gifted editor."
—New York Times bestselling author Lexi Ryan
"Working with Nic on my book was probably one of the best collaborative experiences I’ve ever had. I’ve worked with editors before who seem more interested in transforming a story into what they would have written, instead of engaging with what I wrote. Nic, on the other hand, saw what I was doing and helped me do it better. Our brainstorming felt seamless and I don’t think I ever got an editorial note from her that I didn’t agree with. Together, we conceptualized a complete rewrite of my book and took it from pretty good to something much brighter. Nic was invested in the story and invested in helping me succeed. Anyone would be lucky to work with her."
