Michelle Bernard

Michelle Bernard – Editor

Project manager, copy-editor and proofreader since 1989, both in-house and freelance. Accurate and high-quality service.

Overview

I have worked as an editorial project manager, copy-editor and proofreader since 1989, both in-house and freelance. Publishers I have worked with include Palgrave Macmillan, Mitchell Beazley, Thorsons (HarperCollins), Continuum, Wisdom Publications and Windhorse Publications. I hold a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sussex and am an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. I am the co-editor of two online literary journals.

My speciality is non-fiction, with a particular emphasis on Buddhist philosophy, literature, higher education and wellbeing. I am detail-oriented and have mostly worked as a copy-editor and proofreader, but also have years of project management experience, so can guide your project through the whole publishing process from start to finish. I also enjoy sharing my experience with authors and being of help in any way I can.

I live in a peaceful village near Cambridge, close to a nature reserve and woods full of rare flowers and birds. I try to bring the calm of my years of meditation practice to my work and relationships with authors.

TESTIMONIALS

'Michelle has been working with me now for about 15 years as an editor and research support for the publications I work on in literature and higher education. Michelle is both highly motivated and independent, and also works to specific assignments. She is a completer finisher of the highest quality, producing well-sourced and well-expressed material and ensuring the quality of my own writing. She proofreads, copy-edits and advises on my various journal articles and book projects. Without Michelle there would be no end products. I am happy to endorse her in any of the roles she applies for.'

'Michelle is a valued member of the Windhorse Publications team. Over the eight years that I have worked with her, I have valued her professionalism, patience and attention to detail. In a small publishing team, with many and varied requests for different types of editing and proofreading, Michelle has been a very reliable colleague.'

Peter Joseph, Director Windhorse Publications

'Michelle and I worked closely together at Parallax Press in Berkeley, California, for five years. I was editor-in-chief and she was senior editor. She edited manuscripts – developing and restructuring some, line editing others, as well as copy-editing and proofreading. We also worked together on marketing descriptions for press releases and back cover text, author relations, and the overall look and feel of each book. It was a joy to work with Michelle, and I cannot recommend her highly enough.'
