Matthew Benjamin – Editor

30 years' experience in commercial fiction and non-fiction with HarperCollins, Random House, and S&S, editing more than 25 NYT bestsellers.

Overview

Formerly an Editorial Director at Penguin Random House, I acquired, edited, and developed books across business, leadership, personal development, memoir, and narrative nonfiction, working closely with authors to transform ideas into compelling, publishable manuscripts.

Over the course of my publishing career, I reviewed thousands of fiction and nonfiction submissions, proposals, and manuscripts, identifying projects with both editorial excellence and commercial potential. I collaborated with authors, agents, editors, marketers, and publicists throughout the publishing process, giving me a comprehensive understanding of what distinguishes a promising manuscript from one that captures the attention of readers, agents, and publishers.

My experience spans every stage of book development—from shaping concepts and proposals to strengthening structure, clarifying arguments, refining narrative flow, and positioning books for their intended audience. Having worked at one of the world's leading publishing houses, I bring both an editorial and market-oriented perspective to every project.

Authors often have expertise, insight, or a compelling story to tell. The challenge is translating that material into a book that is clear, engaging, and impactful. My work has centered on helping manuscripts achieve that goal through thoughtful development, rigorous editorial analysis, and practical guidance.

Whether you're refining a proposal, assessing a manuscript's strengths and weaknesses, or preparing a book for publication, I offer the perspective of an editor who has acquired books, championed projects internally, and worked closely with authors to bring ideas successfully to market.
