Matt Samet

Matt Samet – Editor

I'm a highly experienced (30 years) writer and editor, with a book and magazine background, particularly in the world of adventure sports.

Overview

I am an experienced writer, editor, copyeditor/proofer, and media/content creator based in Colorado.

I have decades of content creation, editing, and workflow management, from magazine articles, to books, to marketing copy for magazines and websites. I’ve written—a lot; I’ve edited—a lot; I’ve copyedited—a lot; I’ve proofread—a lot. I also hold a BS in Journalism and an MA in English, and am fluent with the Chicago Manual of Style.

I’m very adaptable to any subject matter, and love helping people tell their stories via the written word.

TESTIMONIALS:

"Matt is an exceptional editor, able to tackle a wide range of projects. Given his background, it's not surprising he's great for detailed, technical editing as for climbing manuals. But we rely on him even more for more nuanced work on narratives and memoirs that require structural, thematic, or character development, as well as wordsmithing at the line level. Matt can literally do it all!" —Kate Rogers, Editor in Chief, Mountaineers Books

"Copyediting a book is a tough job. It demands a rare combination of skills— the ability to manage both the broad scope of a project and its smallest, most critical details. But what matters just as much as technical skill are the human qualities—bringing encouragement, offering perspective, and building a collaborative, trusting rapport. Matt brought all of that and more. His professionalism and presence consistently elevated the quality of my manuscript. He was an ideal collaborator, and I was lucky to have him on my team." —Steve Duda, author of River Songs

"Matt was incredibly fun to work with. He quickly tuned my manuscript into a wonderful finished product I couldn’t be more proud of. I’m grateful for his knowledge and easy manner." —Russ Clune, author of The Lifer

“I had the pleasure of working with Matt on a complicated book that required a deft, but gentle, editing hand, compassion for the writer’s side of the process, and a curiosity that really improved the book. Couldn’t recommend him more as a true partner in the creative process.” —Geoff Powter, author of Survival Is Not Assured

"Working with Matt has been hands-down one of the best parts of my writing experience over the past two decades. His ability to work across all altitudes of writing—from the big picture to precise prose—is unparalleled. Matt also brings a level of empathy and care for the human experience into his editing that makes him an invaluable editor and partner in writing." —Majka Burhardt, author of More

"Matt is the consummate editor, able to see both the forest and the trees, to pay attention to the details as well as the overall arc of a manuscript. He can sharpen a bloated manuscript, or work with an author to bring out his unique voice. The key is Matt’s ability to quickly connect with the writer, and to respect the hard work but also vulnerability that are inherent in creative output. This is so important to being an editorial ally." —Karla Olson, Publisher, Patagonia Books

Work experience

Self-employed

May, 2022 — Present
I have been a full-time freelance book and magazine editor since spring of 2022, but have worked in this field on and off for the past 20 years. I'm also a published freelance writer, primarily in the rock-climbing space, in titles like Climbing, Outside, and Alpinist. I've written or co-written six books, including climbing guidebooks, how-to books, a dictionary of climbing slang, and a memoir—I know what it's like to be both on the writing and the editing side of the equation, which gives me a better understanding of the process.

Outside, Inc.

Mar, 2017 — May, 2022 (about 5 years)
Editor of Climbing Magazine, the world's longest continuously published climbing publication. In this role, I gained a bottom-to-top understanding of publishing, from a query letter and an incipient idea all the way up to a story in layout, ready for production. Over the years, I have helped countless authors bring their vision to print, many of whom went on to mainstream publishing success.

Matt worked with me on my book, The Hunt for Light. He was everything I was looking for in an editor; talented, experienced, thorough, responsive, gave helpful insight and perspectives and above all he engaged with my book with a high level of care. I would definitely work with him again!

Matt copy/line edited my book and I had a great experience working with him. He is very easy to communicate with and is quick to respond to any issues. He delivered his edits well before my expected finish date and was willing to look and work on final touches past that point. His edits were on p...

Attention to detail was less than expected.

Hi Roy, I'm sorry my attention to detail was less than expected. This is actually the first time I've heard this from anyone I've worked with, in 22 years of editing. I believe I did my best with...
