Overview

I am a seasoned editor and professional wordsmith, and my absolute favorite part of my job is helping authors make their work shine. My experience includes production, developmental editing, and acquisitions for traditional publishers, as well as coaching and editing for self-published authors. I hold a master’s degree in publishing from The George Washington University, and my editing portfolio includes numerous bestselling non-fiction books, with a focus in Christian non-fiction, history, lifestyle, and children’s non-fiction. As a freelancer, I specialize in developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading, and I can also provide authors with advice on working with and pitching to traditional publishers, if that’s the publishing route they want to take with their work. (If self-publishing seems like a better fit, I will always recommend that.)

My editing style is collaborative and flexible based on the specific needs of the project. I will make whatever suggestions I think necessary to make a book all that it can be, but I never want an author to feel set aside or unheard in the process. As an editor, I firmly believe that my job is to help authors in their creative process—not to insert myself in their work. To that end, I write a lot of queries and include a thorough editorial memo with my edited draft, so the author understands my thought process and can respond and even disagree as needed. I make sure any suggested edits are clearly marked in track changes so they can be easily reviewed. In addition to editing main text, I am able to assist with formatting of notes and bibliographies, and I can also give guidance for acquiring permissions if needed. I work mainly with the Chicago Manual of Style, but I also have experience with AP style, and I am comfortable adapting to in-house style guides when provided. I can work quickly, and I thrive under deadlines. I would love to meet you and learn more about your project, and I look forward to collaborating with you in your writing!

WELL WAY Amanda Reynolds
Mary Beth was a HUGE help to me in the editing process!! She offered insight, clarity, and direction in so many areas...including about the publishing process. She was very easy to work with, communicated promptly, and made the editing process go a lot smoother. She listened to my wants and did a great job of preserving my voice and character in the book.
