"Though much of modern trade publishing is willing to sacrifice the aesthetic of the book for the bottom line, Counterpoint Press has chosen to retain a tradition of well-made books. In the pursuit of this goal, we regularly engage Mark McGarry at Texas Type & Book Works to design and produce our literary fiction and non-fiction titles.
After 22 books, we remain pleased to have his services. Mark's superior typographic skills and his on-time delivery of great-looking pages, makes Texas Type & Book Works one of our favorite resources for design and production.”

Publisher, Counterpoint Press

“I have had many book designers over the years. I have never had such a clean yet stylish design as that produced by Mark McGarry of Texas Type & Book Works. . . . In the fall of 2004, when I first saw the proofs of my Like a Rolling Stone: Bob Dylan at the Crossroads, I immediately called Robert Kimzey, the Managing Editor of PublicAffairs, to get the name of the designer; I wanted to make sure he was thanked in my acknowledgments. I didn’t want there to be a chance of his name being omitted. I’ve never done that before, but I hope to do it again.
If I ever have another chance to work with Mr. McGarry, I will count myself very lucky, though I already am.”

Work experience

Self-employed

Jun, 1998 — Present

In 1998 I founded Texas Type & Book Works, a full-service book design and production company based in Dallas, Texas. Since then I have designed and produced non-fiction, fiction, reference and religious books for a variety of trade and academic publishers including Oxford University Press, PublicAffairs, Basic Books, Thomas Nelson, Rodale, Liberty Fund, Texas Tech University Press, Counterpoint Press and Da Capo Press. In addition, I've designed and produced books for local Dallas institutions and organizations including Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center, and the Greenhill School.

Laying the Foundation (now NMSI)

Jan, 2008 — Oct, 2010 (over 2 years)

After a period of consulting and contract work, I joined Laying the Foundation (LTF) as the Director of Publishing. Initial responsibilities included assessing existing LTF content creation processes, discovering potential solutions for an electronic publishing workflow, assisting the CEO and COO with the writing of a grant to support a digital publishing department at LTF, and creating miscellaneous marketing and support materials for management and staff.

After LTF’s publishing program was funded, I worked with Quark Inc., the chosen vendor for publishing software, to architect the Scope of Services and the Statement of Work. After installation was complete I continued to work with Quark developers to create a custom XML schema for LTF tests and lessons.

Other responsibilities include: hiring, training, and managing content editors for English, math, and science departments; working with content directors to deliver LTF tests and lessons in print and online formats; designing XML structured Quark/InDesign templates for automated publishing; troubleshooting XSLT and schema mapping issues; advising COO and CEO on publishing related issues; and supporting LTF management and staff with marketing materials. Taylor Publishing

Apr, 1996 — May, 1998 (about 2 years)

At the time I worked at Taylor Publishing they were the 10th largest book printer in the United States.

I worked in the Trade Books Division, where I designed large format, 4-color books in the areas of pop culture, history, gardening, and sports.

Since the press room (sheet-fed only) and bindery (both Smythe and perfect) were on site, I followed each of my books through the manufacturing process. See less

Word Publishing (now Thomas Nelson)

Mar, 1988 — Mar, 1996 (about 8 years)

As Editor: Hired as an contract editor in Word’s academic department, my responsibilities included copyediting new testament and old testament volumes in the Word Biblical Commentary series, reviewing translation issues in several Bible translations owned by Word, and liaising with the production department on Greek and Hebrew typesetting.

As Book Designer: I migrated from editorial to the design and production department where I was responsible for designing trade books as well as marketing material. During this time I designed books and packaging for numerous ECPA authors including Max Lucado, Billy Graham, Charles Swindoll, Fr.Richard John Neuhaus, and Frank Perretti.

The scores assiged above are odd but consistent with unusual circumstances. The work as started and progressed was of high quality and progess was timley and appreciated. The designer "disappeared' for circumstance unknown to me. The project was not completed and now long overdue. This project has been terminated.
