Mariah Bear

Mariah Bear – Editor

I'm a collaborative and highly experienced book editor who has done work for Random House, Lonely Planet, and other nonfiction leaders.

Overview

With over 30 years in book publishing, I have acquired and developed New York Times bestsellers in travel, outdoors, and humor topics as well as category leaders in a wide range of nonfiction how-to and DIY topics. That means I've got a great eye for what works and what doesn't in a trade nonfiction title as well as the experience to help you shape your text for maximum impact—and the flexibility and chill to help you make the book you envision (or, hey, help you develop that vision if you're not quite sure the best book to reflect your ideas, expertise, and interests). I see the editorial process as an organic one that begins wherever you are, whether that's with an almost-complete manuscript, a really cool idea, or anywhere in between. My experience in-house at a number of successful publishers gives me an insider's view of how the industry works and what publishers are looking for, while my side hustle as a writer makes me the collaborative and kind editor I wish to see in the world. I might even sleep using The Chicago Manual of Style as a pillow, or perhaps a stack of New Yorker magazine canvas totes, depending on the season.Am I the right editor for you? Do you like prompt replies, professional work, and the occasional dad joke? Then, hello!I've acquired, developed, and edited books in topics including:• Cooking• DIY & Crafts• Entertainment• Home & Garden• Self-Help & Self Improvement• Outdoor Survival and Activities• TravelCheck out my portfolio for examples of titles in these genres. And, given that the best editing strives to be invisible to the reader, allowing the author to bask in center stage . . . if you need more details on just what, precisely, my work on the portfolio titles amounted to, just ask! I'm proud of every project and, perhaps even more so, proud of my strong, ongoing relationships with the authors I've edited.
