María Francia Domínguez Rodríguez

María Francia Domínguez Rodríguez – Designer

Graphic designer, art director & illustrator with 20+ years' experience, specializing in children's books and KDP-ready design.

Overview

I'm María Francia, a graphic designer, art director, and illustrator with over 20 years of experience in editorial design. My career began in Venezuela and continues today from Tenerife, Spain, where I combine art direction, design, and illustration to turn ideas into visually coherent projects ready for print or digital publishing.

I've worked with major brands such as Sanofi Aventis, Procter & Gamble, and Kraft Foods, developing visual campaigns and corporate materials. For several years I led book design and layout for Editorial Jurídica Livrosca, which sharpened my eye for editorial detail and long-form print production.

Today I specialize in helping self-publishing authors bring their books to life — particularly children's books, educational titles, and illustrated non-fiction. My work covers the full journey: custom cover design, interior layout, character and scene illustration, and Amazon KDP-ready files (print and ebook formats).

My illustration work includes El dulce revés de Luna, a children's book about emotional resilience rated 4.9/5 from 25 reviews, and the "Escuela para Valientes" series, with over 140 reviews on its first volume alone. I've also developed a recurring children's character used across four titles from two different publishers, currently rated between 4.4 and 4.8/5 with over 150 combined reviews.

I work in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate, and I'm comfortable adapting a design across hardcover, paperback, and Kindle formats while respecting bleed and margin requirements.

If you're looking for a designer-illustrator who can take your book from manuscript to a cover and interior that genuinely reflect its story, I'd love to hear about your project.

Maria was extremely helpful in my very first experience publishing a children's book. She offered her professional opinion in conjunction with what I wanted to do. I originally thought to hire her to format my book for kdp publishing, but I am very glad I decided to hire her for illustrations a...

I decided to create a children's book for our grandson. I used AI to help create the pages. I came to Reedsy to hire an editor for formatting my nearly completed book. I sent out TWENTY queries, which were all refused due to my having used AI. I'd made it clear that this was only a project for ou...

Jonathan, thank you so much for these kind words - and for trusting me with Darcy's story. I want to say something about those twenty rejections: I think it's a shame authors get turned away simpl...

How do you use shape theory and color language to communicate a character’s personality?

Shape and color are the two fastest-reading tools an illustrator has, because kids process them before they process anything narrative. I lean on shape theory constantly: rounded, curved forms read as soft, friendly, and safe (think a plump, circular sidekick), angular shapes with sharp points re...

What, in your opinion, is most important to remember when illustrating for children's books?

That the child is the reader, not the adult buying the book. It's an easy thing to say and a surprisingly easy thing to forget when you're deep in a polished, portfolio-worthy illustration. In practice that means a few things for me. First, readability over realism — a child scanning a page need...

How do illustrators maintain character and scene consistency across a children’s book?

The single biggest tool for me is a model sheet I build before touching the manuscript: front, side, and 3/4 views, a few key expressions, and the character's proportions measured out (head-to-body ratio, arm length relative to torso, etc.). I keep it pinned next to my canvas the entire project a...
