Lucy Vallance – Editor

Versatile editor developing books for special interests & children's. Experienced at Penguin, Bloomsbury, Chicken House, DFB, Crowood, T&F.

Overview

I am a friendly, professional editor, who enjoys working with authors to produce the highest quality content possible. I have over ten years of publishing experience, primarily centred on trade non-fiction, but also crossing over into children's and academic. I have excellent communication and project management skills, as well as considerable experience in editing, content development, copywriting, ideation and developing commercially successful titles. I specialise in non-fiction books for the professional hobbies and interests market, with particular experience in Performing Arts, Sport, Architecture and Craft Food. I am also experienced in children's books (fiction and non-fiction) and have spent time at the top trade publishing houses, including Penguin Random House, Bloomsbury, Chicken House (Scholastic) and David Fickling Books.

For the past seven years I have been a Commissioning Editor for non-fiction special interest books at one of the few remaining independent publishers in the UK. I have commissioned and edited over 100 books during this time, working with Olivier and Tony award-winning industry professionals, as well as England international coaches. I have also secured forewords and endorsements from high profile figures such as Sir Kenneth Brannagh. In particular, I developed a new Theatre series called the Crowood Theatre Companions, authored by leading practitioners and teachers in the performing arts industry. I acquired authors from leading institutions such as the Royal Opera House, RADA, The London Film School, Pinewood Studios and The Royal Ballet.

I have managed books from acquisition to publication, involving significant editorial input from the draft proposal to the final manuscript, including concept, structure, content, audience, flow, readability, substantive editing and detailed feedback. Previously, I have worked at one of the top academic publishers in the UK, Routledge.

I thoroughly enjoy editing and development, ensuring that all content is at the very highest standard. I have a First Class BA Honours in English Literature and a Masters’ Degree in Victorian Literature, in addition to strong literacy and proofreading abilities, meticulous attention to detail and excellent communication and project management skills. I would love to work with you on your next project!
