Louise Kelly

Louise Kelly – Editor

I live in Dublin with my husband, four children and two cats. I love to read and write. Over the pandemic I relearned how to knit!

Overview

Before I stepped back from publishing to be with my four children, I worked for Dorling Kindersley on their Preschool (0-5 yrs) list. This was a whirlwind of a list with sound buttons, safety testing, fabrics and pop-ups! Opening your desk drawers usually emitted some sort of farm sounds or various touch and feel elements. Prior to that I worked for John Wiley & Sons on their architecture imprint - Wiley-Academy. I have experience working from concept to shelf in the books industry, spending my college years working in a bookshop and entering into publishing after completing my MA in Oxford Brookes, UK. I am meticulous, reliable and diligent - despite what my children may think - I am diplomatic and work hard to help people be the best they can. If it's my kids then I'm helping with arts and crafts, costumes and learning, but professionally I can proofread, copyedit, project manage and write to ensure that your project is completed to its absolute best.

Work experience

Dorling Kindersley

Jun, 2007 — Jul, 2013 (about 6 years)

I was the main production contact for the preschool list, although I also helped on books for the older age groups. The marketing, editorial, design and sales teams all fed their information through me so I could control the work in progress on the list. We worked with publishers around the world so the files for each language had to be submitted at the same time and the books then distributed globally. I was involved with a title from the beginning organising dummies, sourcing materials and safety testing prior to print (and after).

John Wiley & Sons

May, 2005 — Jun, 2007 (about 2 years)

I was the only full-time production team member on the prestigious Wiley-Academy imprint. I worked closely with the printers, freelancers and authors - some of whom were high profile architects. We produced journals as well as photographic coffee table books and technical and instruction manuals for architects.

Wise Owl Bookshop

Jun, 2003 — Jan, 2004 (7 months)

I moved from another branch of the bookshop to set up a new shop in another part of Dublin. I was responsible for setting up the shop layout, stocking the shelves (and managing stock), hiring staff and managing the cashflow. I took this role having worked in the previous branch for nearly four years, but on the understanding that I would only stay for a limited time as I was travelling before starting my MA in Publishing.
