Claire Rose – Editor

Children's book editor * Former school librarian * MA Writing for Children * Collaborative, reader-first approach to editing

Overview

"An incredibly supportive and knowledgeable editor." - Clara Booth, author-illustrator of Lost & Found in History.

"Working with [Claire] has been wonderful, pleasant, and fruitful for me [...] I really enjoyed it." - Balthazar Pagani, author of How to be a Manga Artist

Since I could read, I knew I wanted to write. This dream took me on a journey through two Creative Writing degrees at Winchester, to working in school and public libraries, to managing the children's book section of an independent bookshop. And now it has brought me to the wonderful world of children's book editing.

At Thames & Hudson Ltd., I was the lead copy editor for Michael Foreman's 'Little Mo and the Snow Monster' and project manager for two titles in Gabby Dawnay and Alex Barrow's bestselling 'If I had a...' series. I have worked on acclaimed narrative non-fiction, including 'Bright Stars of Black British History' and have written back cover and marketing copy for a range of titles.

I have been tutored by wonderful children's authors and editors, from Judy Waite and Judith Heneghan, to Imogen Cooper (formerly of Chicken House). I know the key steps to creating an engaging children's book with solid foundations, compelling characters and a driving plot, and how to craft creative non-fiction that educates and entertains in equal measure. My service is personable and collaborative - I want your heart to make it to the page so the final book is one you are proud to put your name on, and as a former school librarian I champion reading for pleasure. By prioritising children's enjoyment, you create books they'll engage with, cherish and learn from.

Children deserve great books. Great books deserve great ideas. Great ideas deserve great writing. Great writing deserves great editing.

Claire was the first person I worked with on Reedsy, and to be honest I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. Now that our project is complete I can categorically state that she exceeded all expectations. Her work was diligent, her responses were quick, and her professionalism was second to none. ...
