Loren Noveck

Loren Noveck – Editor

Copy editor, development editor, dramaturg, and sometime writer. 20+ years in adult trade publishing, currently at Penguin Random House.

Overview

I'm a production editor by trade, with experience at Penguin Books (when it was its own company), Oxford University Press, and now at Penguin Random House for nearly twenty years. The great thing about working at a large trade publisher is every kind of project crosses my desk--bestselling fiction, Pulitzer-Prize winning history, cookbooks, self-help, crime novels, science fiction, science...you name a genre and I've probably got at least a passing acquaintance with it. (For good or for ill; after a few bad experiences, for example, I try to steer away from books about exercise and diet systems that will Change! Your! Life!)

As a freelancer, I also edit, copyedit, and proofread things ranging from literary journals to nonprofit annual reports to cookbooks. I also have an extensive background in theater--dramaturgy, literary management, running a tiny off-off-Broadway company for a while--and now write and edit theater journalism and criticism.

Basically, I know a little about a lot of things, from cosmological physics (I will be forever be proud to be acknowledged in one of Stephen Hawking's books for catching an embarrassing error) to the proper spelling of Beastie Boys song titles to the attitudes toward Muslims in Elizabethan England, which makes me good at copyediting and pub quiz.

I work on more than 100 titles a year in all genres, styles, and subjects for a major trade publisher. I supervise copyediting and proofreading, copyedit ancillary materials like jacket copy in-house, and know a little bit about a lot of things. Recent major projects include Beastie Boys Book, 3-7 Danielle Steel novels per year, Rachael Ray's upcoming cookbook, and all kinds of other things large and small.
