Lauren Humphries-Brooks

Lauren Humphries-Brooks – Editor

Specializing in genre and literary fiction since 2015, with publishers and imprints including Macmillan, Tor, St. Martin's, and Erewhon.

Overview

I’ve been a freelance editor since 2015. I work with large and small publishers, editing services, and private clients. I have amassed a resume encompassing literary fiction and non-fiction, genre fiction (including sci-fi/fantasy, horror, romance, LGBTQ+, and mystery/thrillers), academic publications, and film and television.

My clients run the gamut from experienced, award-winning authors, to new writers looking for guidance through the editing process, and include Pulitzer Prize nominees, first-time fantasy authors, family historians, and film critics.

I'm passionate about writing and editing - every book is worthwhile, every writer has a story to tell. I strive to help authors create something splendid, something of which they can be proud.

I am a writer myself, with a Master’s in Creative Writing from the University of Edinburgh. I believe that a good editor works for the good of the author.

My goal is to make a book the best it can be.

Lauren is an AMAZING Editor. She provides straightforward, comprehensive feedback and fantastic suggestions for improving your storyline. I was impressed that she didn't simply rush through the process of editing my very first historical romance book. She took her time with it, and all of her feedback has been wonderful in helping me know where I was missing something, overwriting, etc. Additio...

Lauren is great to work with. Her editorial assessment was not overwhelming at all, but still let me know what was working and what my challenges were. The feedback was constructive and easy to put into practice. She was also responsive and flexible during the process, which I appreciated. I will definitely work with Lauren again!

Lauren provided me with excellent guidance which showed she took considerable time and effort working on her analysis of my story. I believe her points were worth incorporating into my next work-over which is exactly what I wanted out of this. As I am new to novel writing, she met me where I was and provided a good roadmap of where I need to go in this process. I am thankful and feel very good ...
