Work experience
Self-employed
I have provided editorial assistance to aspiring writers, and companies looking to create children's content to promote their brand. I have also provided children's puzzles, such as Spot the Difference puzzles, crosswords, wordsearches and logic puzzles to newspapers and children's publishing companies.
Harper Collins
I copyedit and proofread manuscripts on Harper Collins' light fiction list, ensuring they make structural sense and picking up any errors in continuity, grammar, spelling or punctuation that may have slipped in at the final stages before publication.
Hawk and Cleaver
I wrote an audio drama which was dramatized for Hawk and Cleaver's "Miscreation" podcast.
Buster Books
I devised and typeset a series of Christmas themed puzzle books (The Kids’ Book of Christmas Wordsearches and The Kids’ Book of Christmas Crosswords), providing the editor with not only the text but also the finished formatted grids for each of the 300 puzzles.
Wondrous Ink
I worked with the publishing director to create the concept for, and then provided all text for, a personalized verse book based on the letters of a child’s name. I also wrote detailed briefs for the illustrator for each illustration. The book sold 100,000 copies in its first year. I then provided editorial advice for their second title whilst on maternity leave.
QED Publishing
I created the Beyond The Cube series of puzzle books based on logic, number, pattern and shape puzzles, providing the text and rough layouts for the editor and illustrator. I also devised the text and detailed concepts for each spread of a series of search and find books (including Spot the Seal Around the World, and Spot the Mummy in the Museum), providing the illustrator with mock layouts using clipart.
Usborne Publishing
I was an in-house writer and editor, which not only entailed writing to detailed briefs and editing colleagues’ work, but also project managing each title - handling budgets and deadlines, working closely with illustrators and sourcing and incorporating advice from experts. I wrote for a wide age group (from 3 to 16 year olds) on a vast array of topics (from chocolate to genetic engineering), including a pack of quiz cards which contained 450 questions on the topic of dinosaurs. I also devised a series of puzzle cards for 8-12 year olds, first creating a box of general brain puzzles, the success of which led onto maths, number, picture, word and memory puzzle boxes.
