Overview
I began freelancing in 2018 but have also worked full time in the publishing industry, receiving the bulk of my training and experience from Concordia Publishing House. Though I enjoy working for a publisher, I love one-on-one engagement with writers and a more intimate author-editor dynamic. My background includes primarily theological books, but within that scope, I have copyedited and proofread academic texts, popular studies, devotionals, children’s books, and curriculum materials for all ages. I have also edited a series of young adult fantasy novels and am open to many genres.
I double-majored in English and theatre, and I also hold an MA in speech and theatre. The theatre thing doesn’t factor in so much here, but I tend to think it means I can assist the shape of a story as it unfolds and communicate effectively. (It also means I can crack out a halfway decent monologue if I ever need to, but again, that’s not really pertinent.) I am a self-starter, I am comfortable asking questions, and my goal is to maintain the integrity of your writing. With every job, I will aim to smooth, clarify, and promote readability for your target audience, ensuring that your voice remains intact and making your words shine.

“The blend of professional and personal skills Kelly brings to copyediting makes her a joy to work with. With professionalism, Kelly deftly manages the detailed work of copyediting and proofreading, keeps projects on schedule, and communicates effectively. She has an appreciation for the nuance that goes into preserving an author’s voice and tone while applying grammar and style rules for consistency and clarity. With a personable touch, she will guide authors through the editorial process, demonstrating great care for the author’s work, asking clarifying questions, and providing thoughtful suggestions to bring out the best in the writing.”
—Denise Prange, Coordinating Editor, Concordia Publishing House
“Kelly is an excellent copy editor and proofreader. She understands both the details of style and grammar, as well as the overarching purpose of a project. When I worked with her on an independent, academic project, she demonstrated the importance of communication in the copyediting process. She reached out to me as was appropriate during the editing process in a timely, professional manner. I never felt worried that she might not get the task done well or on time. Prior to the project, I had asked her for advice on flow and style while she edited, and she went above and beyond to offer helpful stylistic comments as well. I would gladly use her services as a copy editor again.”

With CPH, I have copyedited and proofread materials ranging from high academia to popular devotionals to children’s stories. When I was in the office full time, I also worked on periodicals, marketing copy, curriculum, and publicity pieces, as well as assisting with product development and author selection. Now, as a freelancer, I specialize in books. In all CPH materials, I have used The Chicago Manual of Style.
