Kate Wong – Designer

I specialize in narrative artwork with a focus on lifestyle, travel and food illustration with bold colors and clever attention to detail

Overview

I'm Kate Wong, an illustrator specializing in narrative artwork with a focus on lifestyle, travel and food illustration. Clients have included The New York Times, Chronicle Books, Crate & Barrel Kids and Texas Monthly, among other clients in the editorial, commercial, and publishing sectors. My work is primarily in watercolor and digital mediums, and blends charm and sophistication using whimsical, delicate details and playful color.

My favorite projects use illustration to tell a story, and to draw in readers. I consider the purpose of illustration to be highlighting and enhancing the work, whether that means helping to spark a reader's interest, clarify an idea, or just provide a beautiful accompaniment to the text. Working alongside an author, I use sketching to explore various concepts and compositions before moving on to a final work that embodies both the content and mood of a piece of writing. One of my favorite parts of a project is adding finishing touches that can serve as Easter eggs, giving a nod to fun and unique details found in the accompanying text.

When I'm not drawing or painting, I can be found working in my yard or caring for my cats (who often make cameos in my work!) I look forward to working together!
