Overview

I began my career at Tuttle Publishing in Boston (Buddhism, art, design) and later worked at several New York publishing houses in-house and freelance. I cover topics as diverse as art and architecture, design, and cooking (coffee table books); non-fiction children's books (educational); some YA; history; psychology; spirituality; sustainability; pop culture; and memoirs.

Once you've finished writing and polishing your work, put it down. Take a breath. Now it's time to take action and let go. Let me copyedit or proofread your manuscript into tip-top shape before you submit it to agents or publishers. Most errors are avoidable. Don't let your writing be overlooked or relegated to the slush pile!

Here is my process:

1. I provide a free 1-page sample edit. If you like my work, I'll send a quote. Note: The standard publishing page is 250 words, so a 50,000-word manuscript is 200 pages. I edit 6-8 pages/hour, depending on the condition of the manuscript. Rates for Copyediting: $35/hour. Proofreading: $25/hour. To learn about copyediting vs. proofreading, refer to my website above.

2. Once you've accepted my quote, I'll email a contract. I'll then begin the process of editing. I might email you for any global queries along the way. I'll send you the manuscript in its entirety upon the agreed-upon due date. If I need more time, I will always reach out in advance.

3. I edit using Word, PDFs, Google Docs, and even pencil-to-paper. I enjoy editing authors in a realistic yet empathetic way, shaping the text as much (or as little) as you prefer.

4. Feel free to contact me anytime. I will respond to your request within 48 hours (except on weekends in the summer)!

Testimonials:
"Kate King displayed an intuitive sense of where I wanted my writing to go and guided it there with a firm hand. She is smart, reliable, and incisive. I am happy to recommend her."
— Scott Banks, ADHD and the Puzzle of the Will

"Kate is by far one of the most conscientious and unflappable professionals I have worked with. She is highly organized, extremely meticulous, orderly, deadline-driven, and a standard-setter for ethics, quality, and managing others. Her qualities are the kind that set positive examples for an entire community of colleagues."
— Monique Peterson, Writer

"Unfortunately, there are many publishers who have a thing for uniformity when it comes to spelling, so it's a good thing there are people like you out there to save people like me from themselves."
— HW Coyle, Cyber Knights
