Kat Kerr

Kat Kerr – Editor

Literary agent and former Florida Book Awards juror available for query assessments, developmental edits, and book coaching sessions.

Overview

I'm currently a literary agent at Donald Maass Literary Agency with a decade of industry experience and a passion for the story-telling process. I also served as a Florida Book Awards Juror for three years (2019-2021) in the adult fiction category.

As an agent, I represent a wide variety of genres though I maintain a special focus in BIPOC voices, women's fiction, and young adult works. I tend to work more in the uplit space with stories that are character-led and lean into the human experience.

I view the editorial process as a partnership, strengthening story and plot with the author's creative goals in mind. I love helping authors achieve their vision!

As a story coach, I am always happy to schedule a Zoom and have a brainstorm session to work through story plot knots. I foster close working relationships with all of my authors as we go through multiple rounds of edits before submission.

I'm passionate about story-crafting; from the skeleton of big picture plot and stakes, to the muscles of story, conflict, and character arcs, to the intricate veins of fine-tuning sentences at line level, it's about bringing your story to life on page.

*Please note: To maintain strict professional ethics, I will not represent—or consider representing—any project I am paid to work on.

Work experience

Donald Maass Literary Agency

May, 2019 — Present
I represent authors writing adult and young adult across a variety of genres. Working closely with my clients, I act as agent and book coach helping grow an initial idea into a full-fledged book. I write pitch letters to editors, negotiate book deals, and help grow an author's career.

Corvisiero Literary Agency

Aug, 2017 — May, 2019 (almost 2 years)
I shadowed and gave literary support to senior agents at the agency and was able to start building my own client list under supervision.

Holloway Literary

Feb, 2016 — Jul, 2017 (over 1 year)
I started as an intern, reading and evaluating agent inboxes, and was then promoted to a literary assistant where I gave editorial feedback via reader reports.

I absolutely loved working with Kat - she really knows her stuff! She made my query letter SO strong, then even spent 30 minutes on a call with me to workshop a few things and answer my questions. Loved the whole experience, and I hope to work with her again!

Ms. Kerr was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about querying. Her advice on both my query letter and synopsis was invaluable. I found her clarifications and openness to questions to be helpful post-collaboration, as well.
