Overview
I have been editing books and periodicals for over ten years. From 2013-2016, I was an Associate Editor at a small press in Mobile, Alabama, where I worked one-on-one with writers to help make their words shine on the page. Not only did I copy-edit, but I worked with them line-by-line, discussing word choice, sentence structure, and overall voice. In 2016, I started my MFA in Creative Writing, where I taught essay and creative writing at the university level and acted as EIC of my school's literary journal. In 2020, I sold my own memoir in a 15-editor auction to The Dial Press. I'm not just an out-of-touch editor. I know what it's like being a writer and trusting someone with your life's work. I believe my experience as a writer makes me a more compassionate editor. Finally, in addition to writing my own books, I have been working at Row House Publishing as a contracted editor.
Working with me is a collaborative experience. I ask lots of questions to be sure we’re on the same page and work with the client to come up with an editing schedule they’re comfortable with. I can be as hands-on or off as you need. Though solution-focused and straightforward, I make sure to balance critique with praise. I think it's just as useful to point out areas that are working as it is to discuss areas that aren't.
