John Plumer – Designer

Smashing illustrated maps, cartography designed to your targeted readership. Good at getting the design right first time.

Overview

Hello, I'm John and I have been making maps for print for 25 years. I gained a degree in Cartography & Geography and went on to work for Dorling Kindersley where I ended up designing the specifications for whole atlases as well as working on the very first four Eyewitness Travel Guides-London, New York, Paris and Rome. After almost a decade I left DK and started working for myself. My main client was The Geographical, the monthly periodical for the RGS, but I soon acquired more clients and over the years have worked with many magazines, publishers and authors like The Sunday Times, Bloomsbury Publishing and Christopher Howse.

I offer a bespoke mapping service. With a brief from you detailing content, final map print dimensions and some idea of the style you would like I can quickly give an estimate or quote. The more information you can give the more accurate the costing. Then I can create a couple of designs of the map/s as first drafts and then proceed as you see fit. Please do see my portfolio of maps at the bottom, there are many different styles I can illustrate.

The map John has created is beautiful. I felt that he took great care to understand the brief, and he was also very quick to respond throughout the project. I would definitely work with John again.

I came to Reedsy to find a map designer because of my publisher's cost for map design and it was a great decision. John's fee was far more reasonable than the publisher's and his maps were absolutely fantastic. He provided exactly what I was looking for. The maps are crisp, clean and more detaile...

John created a map of Alaska for me to use in my true crime book, "Murder and Mystery in the Last Frontier." He quickly made exactly what I wanted. I highly reccommend him and wish I'd hired him for my last book!
