I specialize in children's books because kids will be your best critics and biggest fans -- next to a good editor.
Overview
I've been an editor for more than twenty-five years and have had the pleasure of working on hundreds of short stories, novels, picture books, and non-fiction tracts. I began my career in newspapers and magazines, both as an editor and reporter. After three years in national syndication I turned to the publishing industry. In addition to working with dozens of self-published authors, I've worked with and for Academic Press (an imprint of Elsevier), Sterling Children's Books, Sage Hill Books, and other traditional publishers. I was also the Communications Director overseeing Editorial and Marketing at a nationwide educational publisher before returning to my true love: working as a freelancer with aspiring authors.I thoroughly enjoy working with new authors needing solid editing and guidance. My years as a journalist can help you keep your story crisp and succinct and help you get to your hook earlier. It's also made me a quick editor able to meet your deadlines. I also pride myself on making sure your voice stays in your story. Simply put, my job is to make your story stand out and hopefully turn a profit in this incredibly competitive business. What Others Have Said About My Work: “Straight up the best editor I’ve ever worked with. I hired nine editors to work on my book because I wanted a variety of opinions. He found misspelled words and problems every other editor missed.” -- Author Rebecca Tyler "Magnificent work." -- K. Alex Walker, Sage Hill Books "John's a good writer but a great editor." -- Kay Hafner, Chapter President, Sisters in Crime"If you're serious about your writing career, hire him!" -- Zackary Richards, President, Ari Communications (formerly Ari Publishing)

Five years experience as an editor for a well-known newspaper syndicate, rising to the rank of National Desk Manager overseeing a team of editors contributing materials to print and online media outlets in the United States and Canada. This experience gave me strong analytical skills, made me detail-oriented, and taught me to work quickly under high-pressure deadlines. I was also a nationally syndicated children's TV critic for three years, with my work appearing in such papers as the San Francisco Chronicle, the Toronto Star, and the Kansas City Star.

I provide content/developmental editing and proofreading services for a wide variety of books, from picture books to adult romances, thrillers to humor. Over the years, I've had the privilege of working with authors from around the world. I've taken dozens of workshops related specifically to children's books, am a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and am an author of several picture books and middle-grade titles. While I have a soft spot and lengthy expertise working in the children's book market, I also specialize in humor books.

I oversaw all editorial production for a nationwide educational publisher. Initially this meant revising and updating all current texts and eventually creating new books for parents and students. I went on to become the Communications Director, adding direct-to-consumer marketing and media relations to my publishing duties, placing our writers and company representatives on local TV and radio programs and several notable publications, including Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, and The Christian Science Monitor.
John provided some great feedback and good points on maintaining PoV.

John should be the editor of the year. Every suggestion, correction, and insight helped to make my story clearer and more compelling. John respected my voice and vision but his edits helped to make my writing crisper and more precise. I also appreciate that he worked in a direct and timely manner...
John is simply the best. He's thorough and knows his job very well. He goes above to make sure the job is well done. Thanks, John. Your experience shines through your work.
