John Briggs

John Briggs – Editor

I specialize in children's books because kids will be your best critics and biggest fans -- next to a good editor.

Overview

I've been an editor for more than twenty-five years and have had the pleasure of working on hundreds of short stories, novels, picture books, and non-fiction tracts. I began my career in newspapers and magazines, both as an editor and reporter. After three years in national syndication I turned to the publishing industry. In addition to working with dozens of self-published authors, I've worked with and for Academic Press (an imprint of Elsevier), Sterling Children's Books, Sage Hill Books, and other traditional publishers. I was also the Communications Director overseeing Editorial and Marketing at a nationwide educational publisher before returning to my true love: working as a freelancer with aspiring authors.

I thoroughly enjoy working with new authors needing solid editing and guidance. My years as a journalist can help you keep your story crisp and succinct and help you get to your hook earlier. It's also made me a quick editor able to meet your deadlines. I also pride myself on making sure your voice stays in your story. Simply put, my job is to make your story stand out and hopefully turn a profit in this incredibly competitive business.

What Others Have Said About My Work:

“Straight up the best editor I’ve ever worked with. I hired nine editors to work on my book because I wanted a variety of opinions. He found misspelled words and problems every other editor missed.” -- Author Rebecca Tyler

"Magnificent work." -- K. Alex Walker, Sage Hill Books

"John's a good writer but a great editor." -- Kay Hafner, Chapter President, Sisters in Crime

"If you're serious about your writing career, hire him!" -- Zackary Richards, President, Ari Communications (formerly Ari Publishing)

Work experience

Self-employed

Sep, 2001 — Oct, 2009 (about 8 years)

Freelance editor working with individual authors, small businesses, and organizations, including Ari Publishing. I also continued my journalism career during this period, writing for AOL, USA Today, Livestrong, and other national and local publications.

Tribune Media

Jan, 1996 — Sep, 2001 (over 5 years)

Five years experience as an editor for a well-known newspaper syndicate, rising to the rank of National Desk Manager overseeing a team of editors contributing materials to print and online media outlets in the United States and Canada. This experience gave me strong analytical skills, made me detail-oriented, and taught me to work quickly under high-pressure deadlines. I was also a nationally syndicated children's TV critic for three years, with my work appearing in such papers as the San Francisco Chronicle, the Toronto Star, and the Kansas City Star.

Self-employed

Feb, 2012 — Present

I provide content/developmental editing and proofreading services for a wide variety of books, from picture books to adult romances, thrillers to humor. Over the years, I've had the privilege of working with authors from around the world. I've taken dozens of workshops related specifically to children's books, am a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and am an author of several picture books and middle-grade titles. While I have a soft spot and lengthy expertise working in the children's book market, I also specialize in humor books.

RSC, LLC

Oct, 2009 — Sep, 2012 (almost 3 years)

I oversaw all editorial production for a nationwide educational publisher. Initially this meant revising and updating all current texts and eventually creating new books for parents and students. I went on to become the Communications Director, adding direct-to-consumer marketing and media relations to my publishing duties, placing our writers and company representatives on local TV and radio programs and several notable publications, including Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, and The Christian Science Monitor.

John's and my collaboration is still ongoing, and I couldn't be happier! John has already helped me reshape my narrative so the theme is so much better addressed, the structure is so much sharper, and the wording is spot on! Man, he knows his stuff! I'm so lucky to have found him. Thank you Reedsy, but mostly, thank you John!

John was kind and helpful from the jump! He was also quite thorough, efficient, and effective in his work! The manuscript's character shines through a lot clearer now! I'd work with him again in a heartbeat! Thanks, John!

John did a great job editing and providing feedback for my story. I like that he was willing to make suggestions that added to the story many of which I chose to incorporate in the story. The only small piece of constructive feedback was that I did not hear anything from John after I accepted his offer and loaded my story. The next thing I heard from him was a few weeks later (still within the ...

John was a highly communicative editor who provided strategic vision, candid feedback and industry perspective on my first children's book. I was so taken with his work I asked to work with him again on a second story I drafted. His communication style was professional and direct and well organized, especially when he explained the edits he made (if any) to the story. I would highly recommend ...
