Jessica Read – Editor

Freelance proofreader with 20+ years’ publishing experience, here to help authors polish manuscripts for submissions and self-publishing.

Overview

I began working as a freelance proofreader in 2006, specialising primarily in fiction. My publishing background includes working on first-edition hardbacks and paperbacks, reprints, and ebook conversions.

Up until the pandemic, I worked as a desk editor on-site at Transworld Publishers in London once a week (this has since become fully home-based). In addition to proofreading full page proofs, this role includes supporting the managing editors by performing final proof checks before print stage, collating corrections from multiple files, and a range of other editorial tasks as needed.

Alongside my extensive experience with major UK publishing houses (including Transworld Publishers, Puffin Books, Quercus Books, Pan Macmillan, and various imprints of Penguin Random House), I also work directly with authors to prepare their manuscripts for agent submission or self-publication.

Whether I’m working on publisher page proofs for a bestselling author’s latest hardback or giving a final polish to a Word document for a pre-published writer, I bring the same level of care, attention to detail, and accuracy to every project. It would be my pleasure to help your manuscript achieve a clean and professional finish.

Work experience

Self-employed

Dec, 2006 — Present
Freelance proofreader working primarily for major UK publishing houses, including Penguin Random House, Quercus Books, and Pan Macmillan, as well as directly for authors. Extensive experience proofreading bestselling fiction and non-fiction in both hardback and paperback, including multiple Sunday Times and New York Times bestsellers by authors such as Dan Brown, Lee Child, Sophie Kinsella, Paula Hawkins, Kate Atkinson, Jilly Cooper, Curtis Sittenfeld, Tess Gerritsen, Terry Hayes, and Jo Nesbo.

The Novelry

Sep, 2024 — Feb, 2026 (over 1 year)
As Content Manager at The Novelry, the world’s top-rated writing school, I oversaw and proofread all newly produced written content across the company to ensure quality, consistency, and performance across all channels. My responsibilities included (but were not limited to) content strategy and planning, including keyword research, tracking, and SEO-led topic development, as well as managing the blog from end-to-end (researching and commissioning articles, creating briefs, editing for publication, and reoptimising/proofreading legacy content).

Self-employed

Jul, 2014 — Present
In 2014, I began working in-house in London for Transworld Publishers (a branch of Penguin Random House) on a weekly basis. Following the pandemic, this role transitioned fully on-screen from home. The responsibilities of this role encompass the duties of both a proofreader and a desk editor. The work usually includes (but is not limited to) performing final checks on book proofs before they are submitted to the printers, the collation of multiple proofreaders’ proofs, checking revises that have been returned from the typesetter, reviewing the work and queries of other proofreaders, analysis of revised plate sections for errors or re-flow problems, and assorted other editorial tasks as required.

Jessica was great. She sent a sample file to confirm her use of track changes and comments was acceptable, and then she delivered not just a wonderfully clean document, but included a glossary of terms from my book. Highly recommended.

This was another gratifying collaboration with Jessica. Her treatment of my manuscript met and exceeded my expectations. There was no decrease in her attention to detail with this book in comparison to the first one she worked on for me and her consistency is so appreciated. Highly recommend!
