Jenny Fitzgerald

Jenny Fitzgerald – Editor

I am a Senior Development Editor with more than twenty years' experience in educational publishing at the high school level.

Overview

Having worked primarily with Hodder Education/Hachette Learning in-house and as a freelancer, over the last twenty plus years, I have honed my skills as a development editor. I pride myself on the close author relationships that I have established and going the extra mile on every title. I work hard to closely support authors through the development process, guiding them through editing in order to create the best possible manuscript. My topic specialisms are History and Geography for the high school market but I have edited across a broad range of Humanities subjects.

With the teacher and student in mind, I work collaboratively with authors to ensure the text works on the page, but will also work in the classroom. I understand how important a project is to each author, and will work hard on every page, paragraph and sentence to help them realise their intentions for their title. The author brings their subject specialism, I bring my expertise in the written word and in how students engage with learning resources. As a result, several authors specifically request that I work on their projects. I am motivated by knowing that an excellent educational resource can genuinely make a difference in the classroom, and strive to create educational resources of the highest possible quality. I have worked on several market-leading, award-winning titles, and with authors who are experts in their field.

Recent feedback from a prominent History author:

'Jenny is wonderful to work with. I have never had such confidence in a development editor. As series editor of a highly innovative new textbook series, I needed someone with a very strong grasp of good style, someone who could instinctively see how we were breaking new ground with new genres while keeping an eye on the expectations of the market. Jenny oozed joy in the work of my author team and showed huge personal commitment to the project. This meant that working with her was always the greatest pleasure. It is rare to work with someone who is great fun, tremendously quick in intelligent grasp of issues and also utterly reliable and faultlessly efficient. I recommend her with huge enthusiasm.'

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2014 — Present
I currently work from home as a freelancer on educational student books, teacher resources and digital resources, across a range of subjects from History and Geography to Economics and Religious Studies. Working closely with authors I develop scripts to ensure they follow the relevant exam specification, can be used effectively in the classroom, and are appropriately illustrated. I have liaised with managers to change procedures, where appropriate, and to ensure titles are delivered on time and to budget.
