Jane Cornwell – Ghostwriter

Hugely experienced arts and culture writer. Jazz and world music critic. Interviewer of A-listers, rising stars. Tells a good story.

Hi there. I'm a London-based Australian writer specialising in music, arts, culture and travel. I'm an arts interviewer for the Weekend Australian, the jazz critic and world music critic for the London Evening Standard, and a contributing editor of Songlines magazine. I know my Herbie from my Kamasi, my mbira from my ngoni. I am curious, well travelled. I listen. I go deep. I value rapport.

Work experience

Jan, 1995 — Present

Since 1995 I have been in demand as a feature writer and interviewer of A-list celebrities and a whole host of musicians, artists, writers, designers and more. In the UK I am best known as a specialist in world music and jazz, and in this capacity have travelled the world interviewing well-known artists and rising stars. Since 1997 I have worked and continue to work on a freelance basis as a writer and MC for the artist Peter Gabriel's Real World Records, and am a compere for his WOMAD Festivals in the UK and Australia. In my capacity as London-based culture writer for the Weekend Australian (News Ltd) and others including the Sydney Morning Herald (Fairfax) I have interviewed a who's who of notable figures: Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Salman Rushdie, even David Hasselhoff. I have written music biographies, and my own music and travel based memoir for HarperCollins. I recently went back to university and did a mature student Masters in Global Creative and Cultural Industries at SOAS, University of London, with a dissertation on the fresh London jazz scene, and got a Distinction.
