Jamie Real – Editor

Professional editor with over 10 years of experience (Chronicle Books, Hachette) ready to ensure that your children's manuscript shines.

Overview

Children's books are the best tools to promote education, empathy, and inclusion. Creating children’s books that are accessible, meaningful, striking, respectful, and diverse is fulfilling to me as both editor and reader. I feel so strongly about encouraging young children to read and to read good books. I know this is how we actively shape the next generation who will continue to build and protect an equitable world for everyone. To me, nothing seems more radical and more inspiring. I'm here to help shape your manuscript into the best form it can be.

As an editor, managing editor/production editor, and project manager, I have more than 10 years of book publishing experience developmental editing, fact-checking, copy editing, line editing, proofreading, and managing hundreds of titles, ensuring consistency and accuracy. I have worked on a variety of children’s titles including games, formats, board books, novelty books, picture books, non-fiction picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, middle grade, and YA novels.

As the former associate managing editor at Chronicle Books, I've worked on award winning and New York Times bestselling titles and series including the Ivy & Bean series and Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site series. I’ve worked with veteran and up-and-coming authors and illustrators such as K.A. Holt, Sophie Blackall, Annie Barrows, Dave Eggers, Taro Gomi, Mark Boutavant, Hervé Tullet, Benjamin Chaud, Hena Khan, Deborah Underwood, Molly Idle, Christopher Silas Neal, Grant Snider, John Parra, Lisa Congdon, Shawn Harris, and hundreds of other talented artists.

Whether you’re self-publishing or polishing your manuscript for submission, I’m available to offer developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading to ensure story cohesion and grammatical accuracy and clarity. I’m also available to review art sketches and final art and provide a sensitivity review and an art consistency and continuity check. I'll always provide respectful, constructive, and useful feedback and edits. I value your writing and will give my undivided and thoughtful attention that your manuscript deserves.

I feel so fortunate to have worked with Jamie on my story edits and art edits. She is meticulous, perceptive, and has a great sense of humor. She picked up on things I had missed in my manuscript and artwork both, and made suggestions that will undoubtedly enhance my work. Jamie is a gem!

Jamie was a pleasure to work with. Her edits to my manuscript were careful and insightful, from line-by-line corrections to copy to suggestions on the larger scope of characters and story structure. She has a keen sense of humor and I could tell that she approached the work with a great deal of thought and sensitivity. She returned her edits ahead of schedule and was very thorough.
